“You think that?” Willow asked astonished
“Should I?” Tara asked before she could stop the words coming out.
Willow could feel herself getting very angry, “I'm really sorry that I didn't establish my lesbo street cred before I got into this relationship. You're the only woman I've ever fallen in love with, so ... how on earth could you ever take me seriously?”
Willow started to walk towards the door. “Willow, please!” Tara called after her.
“Have fun at the fair.” Willow said storming out.
Willow stormed into the magic box and sat at the research table.
“Will?” Xander said as he moved down the little stairs from the forbidden area on the second level of the shop.
“What.” Willow snapped.
“Whoa.” Xander sat down opposite Willow. “What’s up?”
“I...I had a fight with Tara.” Willow said eventually
“Oh.” Xander said. He put the book he had brought with him down on the table. “What about.”
“Oh nothing…” Willow said, “Just that I scare her.”
Xander looked at Willow for a moment. He had known her long enough to tell that not only was she very angry but she was also very upset about the fight. “Boogie-man scary or just plain Friday the 13th scary?”
“It’s not funny Xander.” Willow said.
“Hence the no laughing.” Xander said with a very sensible face on. “Look Willow, whatever this fight was about. It doesn’t matter.”
“Doesn’t matter!” Willow asked incredulously. “No of course not….It doesn’t matter at all that my girlfriend is afraid of me.”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it.” Xander said.
Xander sighed and took Willow’s hands across the table. “Well…”
“Well what?” Willow asked.
“Tell me. About the fight I mean. “ Xander asked in the most concerned voice he could muster.
“She said she was afraid of me.” Tears started to form in her eyes. “And t-that we were, we were just a fad, y’know?”
This confused Xander. “Just a fad?”
“Like, I was just going through a phase…and t-that after college I would go back to boys.” Willow began to cry.
Xander looked at Willow. “Did she actually say that?” Xander asked.
“Well..no.” Willow started to say something but was interrupted.
“Then it doesn’t matter.” Xander said again.
Willow snatched her hands away from Xander’s “how can you say that?” Willow asked angrily. She got up from the table and ran into the training room.
“Willow wait.” Xander said as he got up and followed her into the room.
“Wait for what Xander?” Willow asked. “For you to tell me that as long as she loves me it doesn’t matter?”
“Does it.” Xander asked. “Isn’t that enough for you?”
“Of course it is.” Willow said.
“Then it doesn’t matter.” Xander repeated.
“But it does.” Willow moved onto the floor mats and threw her arms up. “She’s afraid of me. Magic me.”
Xander followed her onto the mat. “So… sometimes the magic you scares me as-well.”
Willow looked shocked. “You.” She said angrily and turned to walk out. But Xander grabbed her arm.
“Willow Your my best friend. And I love you. But you have to face up to the fact that your magic can be scary.”
Willow pulled her arm away from Xander. “No.” She said. “It’s not scary.” She started to cry again “I’m not scary?”
Xander held onto Willow again and said. “Willow, you are the most sweet and caring person I have ever known. Willow began to smile. “But you can be scary as hell as well.
An anger swept through Willow that she had never felt before. She slapped Xander hard in the face.
Xander blinked but didn’t get angry. “Willow you need to hear this.” He gestured to the mat they were standing on. “If I have to fight you to get you to listen then lets throw down.” He smiled, “But I’d rather not get beaten up to tell you this.”
Willow smiled aswell. “I’m sorry Xander.”
“No biggie.” He smiled
Willow moved away and stood by a window and looked out. She turned back to Xander, “I can see how it could be scary.”
“Good.” Xander smiled.
“But she thinks all we have is a fad.” Willow began but Xander cut her off.
“No she doesn’t.” He moved over to Willow. “She loves you, not fad love you, not little love. The full big scary love. She lives you, she eats you, and she breathes you. You are all she has Willow. You’re her life.”
“But..” Willow began.
“No…Willow, your all she can see of tomorrow. Any fool can see that she would die for you.” He held Willow’s chin so she was looking him in the eyes. “And you love her back just the same.”
“Xander I… “ Willow looked about her. “I have to tell her, she has to know.”
“She knows already.” Xander said quietly. “Now go find her.”
Willow smiled and ran from the room. A few seconds later she came running back in and hugged Xander. “Thank you.” She let go and ran out of the room again.
“Anytime.” Xander said to himself.
Tara had spent the last hour or so alone at the fair. She had wandered for a bit but it just wasn’t the same without Willow there. Eventually she had found a bench and had just sat, thinking of Willow and how to make things right.
“I’m sorry.”
The voice had come from behind her but she knew it anywhere. “Willow?”
Willow came round and sat on the bench next to Tara. “I’m so sorry.”
“No I’m sorry.” Tara said, “I-I made you mad.”
“I’m only mad about you.” Willow said. “I know my magic can be scary but I want to share it with you.” Willow reached for Tara’s hand and held onto it tight. “I love you and I want you to know that there will always be a place for you in my life.” She took Tara’s hand and placed it over her heart, “And that place is right here.”
“I love you Willow” Tara said, tears welling up in her eyes. She hugged Willow.
“I love you too.” Willow hugged back.
