by Jacques L. Vicknair
My interest in finding out who my ancestors were began in the early 1960's. At that time, my maternal grandparents and paternal grandmother were still living, and I was afforded a very good start. I spent most of the past thirty five plus years in libraries, going through census records, church records, obituary files, and visiting almost every cemetery in South Louisiana. I have seen various spellings of my last name over the years, but in my records, I choose to use the current spelling. I have done my best to assure that everything in my records is correct, however mistakes are possible, and I would like to encourage anyone having any additions or corrections to e-mail me. Some of the information contained in this site was previously written by me, and published between September 1986 and March 1995, in Les Voyageurs, the quarterly publication of the German-Acadian Coast Historical and Genealogical Society. The abbreviations following any date listed in this site indicate the church in which those records were located, and a key is listed at the bottom of this page.
Johann Nicolas Wichner, progenitor of all the Vicknair families was born ca. 1700 in Germany. The date and place of his birth, or the names of his parents is unknown. Nicolas, as he was known in the majority of the records, came to Louisiana in the 1720's, settled on the German Coast, in present day St. Charles Parish, and married ca. 1730, to Anna Barbara Friderich, born July 18,1708, in Rothenberg, Germany, daughter of Johann Conrad Friderich and Ursula Freyen, and the widow of Frederick Merkel. Johann Conrad Friderich was born October 8,1679 in Rothenberg, son of Jacob Friderich and Margaretha (Surname not listed), and he married on October 27,1702 to Ursula Freyen, of Ravenfried, daughter of Johann Freyen. The information on the Friderich family was shared with me many years ago by Marjorie Chauvin Vicknair. Nicolas died July 15,1772 (SJB), his widow died six months later on January 25,1773 (SJB), and both burials were recorded at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edgard, LA. Nine children were born of this union, and the links to each generation are listed below.
