A Day in the Life of a Red Tailed Hawk
copyright Shawn Reed 1993

I was awakened by the rising sun. The cool breeze of the Colorado mountains felt good under my feathers. I spread my wings and let the sun warm my body. I sat watching the Colorado River as the sun hit it in the early morning. Life was good up here in the Colorado mountains.

I lifted my wings and took off for the river. When I reached it, I looked for something to eat. Just then, I saw something moving on the ground. I dove down and caught a wriggling garter snake. It made an excellent breakfast. I got a drink of water.

There was a nice breeze. I flew off to the southeast. I flew back to my tree. When I landed, I dozed off and must have fallen asleep because when I woke up, the sun was high in the sky. I guessed, by the way my shadow fell on the ground, that it was noon. It was lunch time. It was calm and quiet. Again I took off and headed for the river.

Usually my rounds are to the river and back. When I was almost back to my tree, I saw a rabbit on the ground. I swooped down at the rabbit but missed it. It ran into a hollow log. I waited awhile on a high branch for it to come out. Sure enough, pretty soon it poked its head out of the log. It cautiously hopped away from the log. When it least expected it, I swooped down and in an instant I had caught it. It made a good lunch.

I rested for awhile looking and listening. Aaah - the peaceful wilderness. This is the place to be if you would like to live a free life.

I went on the route defending my territory. It was time for supper. I caught another snake, which made a good appetizer. Then I caught a nice, plump robin. I went to the river to get a drink. I was full!

I went back to my roosting sight. The sunset was magnificent. It gleamed with a tint on the water. The sunset was all different colors - reds, yellows, oranges, purples and blues - the color of the sunset and the sky. Ah, the peace and quiet, too quiet.

Just then I saw a bobcat. It jumped at me, but with split second timing, I escaped the razor sharp claws. I waited for awhile and made sure it was gone. Whew, that was a close call! Then I went back and went to sleep.

I awoke in the night. For what reason, I don't know. I decided to fly my route. The cool night air was refreshing. So, I decided to get a snack before the night predators really got going. I found a perched bird and attacked. When I was full, I carried the rest back to my tree to finish eating and then I went to sleep.
