This England never did, nor never shall,
lie at the proud foot of a conqueror,
but when it first did help to wound itself.
Now these her princes are come home again,
come the three corners of the world in arms,
And we shall shock them.
—Shakespeare, King John, 5:vii.
WARNING AND DISCLAIMER:
Vanity of vanities; all is vanity. —Ecclesiastes 1:2, KJV. Also,
1:14, 2:1, 2:11, 2:17, 2:26, 3:19, 4:16, 6:9, 11:8, 12:8... got it yet?
Hello, I'm Peter. I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which is most famous for being
exactly halfway (two hours) between Chicago and Detroit. It used to be famous
for that song, "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo" but everyone who was
alive when the song was released has since died. I filled out a personal ad a
while ago, so why type in all this crap twice?
What is Oscar Wilde doing in a dump like this?
Often called America's greatest living man of letters, Vidal may in fact be
America's last man of letters. He is Eurocentric, bisexual, a onetime
political candidate and a professional pain in the ass. Norman Mailer later
admitted he thought Vidal was the devil even as they joyously, viciously
lampooned each other in their books. He sued Truman Capote for libel,
successfully, and was himself sued by William F. Buckley Jr.,
unsuccessfully. He is the last of that great, old race, born in what Greil
Marcus called "the old, weird America."
Sadly, James Coates's Brewer twins shrine is down, in demure obediance to
copyright law. Oh, well. In the meantime, I recommend you read James' online
diary and try to follow our
Hero as he gallantly tries to sleep his way across London, successfully, and
the world (Dublin, Sydney, New York, Provence), ongoing.
I was going to get rid of this picture, but beauty is rare enough as it
is. So here is a 104kb JPEG of the Brewer
twins, pulchritude incarnate.
These notes are about some of my other favorite
authors. One day, I shall cover them in more deserving length. And here is a list of authors I've liked, and movies,
comics, &c., placed here for convenience.
