:: Chp 01: Miss Bad Attitude ::

“The law of defamation is intended to protect a person’s reputation…” Dead boring Mr. Douglas O continued to drone on the lecture. His monotonous voice that had been humming for the past one and a half hour was slaughtering the students’ exhausted minds. Yawn. drew circles on her notes to swab off her boredom.

She could see… two seats away were two girls admiring their manicure, disregarding the lecturer’s talk. From the corner of her eyes, she sensed people murmuring among themselves, engaged in their own conversations. Some were secretly playing with their phones. Others had their eyes fixed at the board while in fact, their minds were somewhere wandering in another place.

“An objectable statement made which merely injures a plaintiff’s business and not his personal reputation is not defamatory.” Mr. Douglas O went on listlessly. stifled another yawn, trying hard not to scream. “There are two kinds of defamation. Libel and slander…”

All right. God damn shit. She couldn’t tolerate any longer. It was never her obstinate character to sit down obediently and absorb loads of crap that appealed no interest to her. Thrashing her books and stationeries into her bag, rose from her seat. Many eyes followed as she stormed towards the door, demonstrating her displeasure of the lesson.

“That calls for another point cut off. .” Mr. Douglas’s warning rolled its way into her vexed mind. “That’s the tenth time you’re doing this for my lesson.”

“Suits you.” shot back, never having the urge to change her decision of leaving. For the ‘n’th time of the semester, she left the lecture halfway, slamming the door hard behind her. Well known Miss Bad-Attitude indeed.

The world was fresher and a lot more spacious when you were supposed to be in school. treaded down the streets, feeling reborn and free. She spent the rest of the morning wandering around aimlessly.

She was rich. But lonely. Her parents were abroad, busy running family business to care much for her. She probably had forgotten how they looked like since she only get to meet them once every two years.

Unlike any other girls, was special. In her own special way. From the outside, she was pretty with big twinkling eyes and possessed a short petite body. But her inside - horrid. One had better learnt her trademark of ‘Don’t Mess With Me’ before nearing her.

But then again. She wasn’t bad. Just rebellious. She wasn’t evil. Just notorious. She could differentiate right and wrong. She was good-natured.

returned to the huge mansion, her so-called home. The moment she stepped in, what greeted her was a stern woman crossing her arms angrily. “! You better explain.” Without the need to say, figured out the school must had called again for her truant act.

She eyed at Florence, waiting for the appropriate words to shoved its way into her mind. Florence was her guardian that her parents had employed to look after her. She was a tall slim woman in her late thirties. She was kind, caring and concerned and respected her. It seemed like Florence was the only living soul in the whole world that sincerely cares for her.

“Well. School just sucks.” declared honestly, bearing no desire to conceal the truth. “Promise I will revise my work later on.” With a cheeky smile, she excused herself and treaded up the stairs.

“That’s something you need to know.” Florence called out. halted her steps and looked over her shoulder.

“Your step cousin’s coming back in two days time.” Florence continued, “He’s furthering his studies here.”

That news didn’t have much impact on her at all. Neither was she excited about that. She was surprised. Just surprised and nothing else. She knew what Florence meant. “Sylvester Sim. That ill-looking cry-baby. Isn’t it?” chuckled.

‘Mind you. He’s a man now.” Florence corrected. “Well. Just take care of him and don’t let that awful history repeat okay?” that apprehensive look on her face amused further. “I mean, don’t go on bullying him.” Florence added.

“Provided if he doesn’t get into my way.” snorted with a mischievous grin. History repeating.. She could definitely recall the last time Sylvester was here for a vacation. It was twelve years ago. They were both still kids, one shy, one hyper.

She remembered setting her Golden Retriever free and that dog went around chasing her step-cousin till he went wet in his pants, crying for help. She remembered the mischievous her adding beetles in his soup and ending him up in the hospital for a severe diarrhea. She recalled how the naughty her snatching off his toys and scaring him in the middle of the night.

Now, she would be meeting this timid, bony step-cousin of hers again. wondered how he looks like now. Already a tall well-build man with killer looks that would make the knees of girls wobble? Or still a mummy’s boy that wet his pants easily? ’s mind thrashed on to the series of ‘revenge’ that Sylvester might be planning now. Will he be forgiving enough to forget the past mistreatment he suffered from her?

Interesting, thought.

But she didn’t care. There was nothing she was going to give a shit about. And nobody can make her.

Nobody.
