This Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a little different than others I have seen, but still works for my point.

From my viewpoint I was still at the "safety" stage according to this chart. Coco saw herself at the "self-actualization" stage. I would disagree with her claim. Although she had certainly risen above the "safety" stage, she was still struggling within the "love and belonging" stage. In my mind she was not that far advanced in the hierarchy of needs.

Promises were made that could never be fulfilled. The economic realities of life interfered so everything collapsed into a matter of self-preservation: hers. I vowed never to go through it again. A few more times after she had left I heard the "Siren Song" again and ran like Hell when I heard it. I'll build what I need on my own or die trying to get there, thank you very much.
