1979: Malibu Nightclub Opens in Lido Beach

In 1979, a Manhattan-style club, the Malibu, opened on Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach. The nightclub, located in a former beach club, became a regular stop on national rock tours. Owners Charles and Tony Greco booked performers like Squeese (the first band to perform at the club), Joan Jett, U2, Johnny Winter, Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Harry, the B-52s, Culture Club, [Adam Ant, Gang of Four, They Might Be Giants, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, and Joe Jackson.] Hybrid metal/rap/hard rock groups Faith No More and Candlebox also performed there, and Grace Jones started her career at Malibu in the 1980s, singing "My Jamaican Guy." The dance club attracted an audience in their early 20s to early 30s, with DJs playing dance music in addition to the live performances. Malibu closed in September 1996 when the Town of Hempstead opted not to renew the club’s lease. Squeeze is shown here in an undated photo. [Square brackets are groups that P.C. Paul remembers having seen at Malibu.]
