Mitchell Field Air Force Base circa 1968

This is an airel image of Mitchell Field Air Force Base in 1968 the approximate point in time I am discussing. Just below the red line is a very long, predominately straight, two lane service road within the air field. We used this road to "clock" our motorbikes. The word clock is being used as a lexicon with the following meaning:

An automobile and the motorbike would being from the left hand corner of the road just below the red line. The person on the motorbike would accelerate and bring the bike up to top speed (wide open throttle--WOT) and the automobile would follow behind and record the motorbike's speed from the automobile speedometer hence the term clocking. The first red line is at least a mile long if not more.

The two yellow ovals indicate the area we called The Scramble Course. Again this was a local lexicon and only those of this time period and from this area would recognize this name. I was told that the two areas in yellow circles used to be a "pitch and putt" miniature golf course maybe back in the fifties. I am not clear as to what years this region was a miniature golf course as it was before my time. I was born in 1957. On a pitch and putt golf course one is given a 9 iron and a putter. You pitch to the green with your 9 iron and putt with your putter.

The area of the two circles was hills, fields, and some woods near the bottom close to the Meadowbook Parkway shown in the image. This is where were rode our motorbikes, mini-bikes, scooters, motorcycles, and motocross. Basically it was a motocross park. The larger yellow circle to the left was mainly hand top soil, hills, valleys, and fields. The smaller yellow circle to the right became predominantly soft sand and ran parallel to the Meadow Brook.
