The City of Isfahan
Isfahan stands in a wide and fertile valley at
an altitude of 1590 m,
North latitude and
East longitude, with a temperate climate, at
the heart of Iran. It has good water supply, for the
Zayandeh-Rud (the Life-Giving River) flows through it from west
to east. The origins of Isfahan are as ancient as Iranian
history.
In the 17th century A.D. Isfahan was laid out as
an entirely new city, then as one of the largest cities of the
world, alongside the old with a group of the finest series of
buildings in the world, such as new mosques, palaces, bridges,
streets and parks. It was referred to as Nisf-i-Jahan
(half the world).
Architecturally Isfahan is the ultimate application of town
planning, road design, water-works, bridges, and structural and
civil engineering. |
