    CHAPTER 1:

     +DREAMS+


    "Late at night,

"Dreaming of you Tonight"



   "Andrew, who is that guy?" Darien asked his blond haired friend.
  "Which one?"
  "That guy. With the brown hair." Darien pointed to the tall brown
haired boy that he remembered from the day before.
Andrew blinked. "That one? I am not sure Darien. I don't know everyone who
comes in here. I basically only know a few who come here really often. Serena 
for one."

    Serena. The brown haired boy over there seemed like a totally wrong match for 
someone like Serena.

     "But I think I heard some kids calling him Toby. Mostly girls."
 "Toby. Toby who?"
"I told you Darien, I'm not sure. That's basically what I hear some of the
other kids call him. Why are you interested any way?"

  Darien shrugged. "No reason. I just saw him the day before and I was a
bit surprised to see him in here." he glanced at Toby, sitting in a 
chair by the counter eating a hamburger and staring at the wall with a 
serious expression on his face. It was the sort of face a frown seemed really used to,
but not smiling.

    "Oh really. How come you didn't' ask him yourself?"

    Darien shrugged. he didn't understand why he was even involving himself
in affairs that didn't even concern him any way. If he was Serena's boyfriend
it wasn't his business how he treated her any way.

 Serena's Boyfriend........once again Darien looked Toby over and agreed
that any one he saw on the streets looked like a better match for her than
THIS guy! Somehow the whole thing seemed too wrong!!!!

   "He's Serena's boyfriend I think." Darien nodded at his friend. Andrew
raised his eye brows. "Since last Saturday Serena hasn't been into
the arcade or in here, so it must be recent." Andrew grinned. "She's a good
kid."

  "Yeah, but Andrew don't you think that he looks a bit seriously overmatched
for Serena's sort of personality?" Darien glanced at Toby.
Andrew shrugged. "He's a good looker, and he looks about her age. Maybe 17
or 16." Andrew saw his friend's expression. "Darien, just because he's 
looking a bit serious, doesn't mean he isn't a nice person. What's with
you today any way? You seem a bit moody? I expected Serena to be the last 
person you would be thinking of."

  Darien felt a bit awkward. Andrew was correct thought. Why was he suddenly
thinking about Serena and whoever she liked for a boyfriend any way?
 "I saw the guy and her yesterday. Serena was a little late because her 
teacher kept the class late for some sort of play thing. The guy squashed
her like a bug for being late and for once it wasn't her fault."

  Andrew looked surprised. "Yeah, But Serena's always late. She'd be
late for her own funeral. She can't help it. Just the way she is."

  "Yeah, but she said that her Teacher kept the class late and it wasn't
her fault and for some reason I believed her. but he's supposed to be
her boyfriend and he started telling her how irresponsible she was right 
in the middle of the street and walked off without a word. I mean, he didn't
have to be so hard on the kid."

   Andrew nodded. "Yeah, I guess that is coming down a little hard on
someone like Serena. but Darien, why do you care any way? I thought you two
hated each other."

   Darien took 3 seconds to think of a good excuse because he suddenly
wasn't even sure himself. "I just felt sorry for the kid. I mean, if she
says it wasn't her fault he doesn't have to humiliate her like that. And
fro once she didn't start screaming an d   shrieking. She just sat under a 
tree and cried a little. At that point I left. But face it Andrew, no matter
who i t    was to, it was a rotten thing to do to any one."

 Andrew nodded. "Yeah, I guess you're right." he glanced at his watch "Ouch!
I had better get back to the arcade. It's almost the end of lunch. I have ten
minutes!"

 Darien nodded. "Yeah, I had better get going too. thanks for lunch Andrew."
Andrew grinned. "Any time Daro!!!"

   Darien walked out the door. he was walking to his car, when he saw Toby
walk quickly out the door and head across the street. Probably headed back
to school. Darien watched him for a few seconds, thinking of how wrongly
he had treated a girl like Serena the day before. 
Speaking of the devil's daughter.........She herself came running at full
speed the way Toby was quickly walking.

   She saw him. "Toby! Hey, wait up!"
Toby must have heard her. Darien was right across the street and he could
hear her. But Toby just kept walking ahead of him and didn't look back.

  "Toby..please wait! Wait up!" she called. She slowed down, obviously tired
from her running. Toby glanced back at her, rolled his eyes and then stood
there impatiently while she walked quickly to catch up to him.

"Toby...why didn't you wait when I called you?" she asked.

he rolled his eyes and crosse d  his arms. "Serena.....do you know what time
it is? It is 12:42, and school is going to begin in 10 minutes!"

  "I know, but ..please Toby..I'm sorry about yesterday! Really. But
it really wasn't my fault! I promise! I didn't mean to keep you waiting."

 he shook his head. "Serena....You NEVER mean it! You always have to give me
some sort of excuse! Even Saga never gave me such migraines as you
have! Why can't you ever take responsibility for your actions?"

 She looked at her feet. "I'll try harder. Really, I will Toby."

he looked unconvinced. "Serena....."

"No, Really. I'll try harder! Please?" she looked at him hopefully.
he sighed. "Ok, but try to do better in school. You're 14, not 4. You have
to try being a bit smarter. Try not being so late. You would not get
detention half as much if you gave SOME effort once in a while."

  Serena nodded, looking at her feet. She felt a lump in her throat.

"Now, are you going to try harder?"

She nodded. he grinned. "Greta. Glad that's cleared up. See you later
Serena. Remember, you're something special."

  She smiled at him and he quickly rushed the way he had been walking, 
towards Juuban high school.  She stared after him and then just
sat down on a bench by some trees and put her face in her hands. But she 
wasn't crying obviously. Just feeling low and depressed.

>AND WHO COUDL BLAME HER< Darien thought darkly. For soemone who is 
supposed to be her boyfriend, even Rei appreciates her more than 
that guy does!

  Somehow, Darien couldn't just get in his car and go off to work now.
He found himself walking over to the other side of the street to
see Serena. he felt embarrassed once he realized he was there, but didn't
have the nerve to go back.

     "Hi meatball head." he grinned. She jumped and looked up at him.
"Darien..please! Just this once, go away and die and leave me alone and.."

"Hey, hey, I'm not here to taunt you. Don't worry." He smiled a little. he
sat down on the bench. "Are you ok? You look a bit flushed."

 She shook her head. "It's none of your beeswax!"

  he smiled. "I know." he nodded. "Serena, I think that that guy is
totally wrong for you."

She frowned at him. "Don t you mean you think I am wrong for HIM? he's
made that clear that he is too good for me any way ay, I don't need you to
confirm that right now. It hurts enough having him say it."

   Darien bit his lip. The guy was really making her feel awful. She
was usually more sure of her self than that. 

  "Serena...that's not what I meant. How can you be with someone
who talks to you like he does," he made a face "Just because you stood him up
for 15 minutes?"

 She shook her head. "No, No No! Toby's the best thing that ever happened
to me."

"Serena, he's the only thing that has ever happened to you." Darien corrected
and felt rotten for saying it. She buried her face in her hands.
"Sorry." he said hastily and felt even sillier for saying THAT to her. 
>Maybe this was a bad idea<

"Serena, I just feel that the guy is not treating you right."
"No, I just have to do better." She sighed, depressingly.

"Serena, you shouldn't have to be with someone who doesn't accept you for
who you are already. Always stay as yourself. You don't need to change
just because someone like him doesn't like it."

  She gave him an almost hurt look.

"Darien, don't. I would think that you would be the first to agree with
everything he said. You are always telling me things like that."

 Darien sighed. " I know, but...Serena I don't do it to hurt any one.
I'm just..."

"Well you do! It hurts ME!" she cried at him and started crying. Her
out bursts surprised him. "And a lot of things you say are the meanest...."

he felt rather bad;y that she took it so hard. "Serena..I don't mean
to be mean. I'm just...teasing." he touched her shoulder.
"I apologize ok?"

 She looked at him uncertainly. "For real? You are apologizing to ME!"
Wow! Darien the jerk was actually human!

  he smiled a little. "I won't do it any more if it makes you feel that way."
She smiled a little. "Thanks. No, you can say it if you want. It's
true and I know it." she sighed. "And so does Toby. I have to try and
do better. At least a little."

  "Serena.."

  She knew he was about to do his lecture all over again. "Like you don't
think that getting a 30 or a 40 on every test doesn't need improvement."
he had to admit maybe she could do a LITTLE better.

 "Ok, but don't over do it and be someone you are not, ok?" 
She nodded with a smile. "All right." then she saw  the time of the hands
pointing on Darien's watch. "YIKES!!!!!!!!!!"
her scream made him jump and all the sparrows that had been hopping on
the grass suddenly flew off.

  "It's 5 minutes to one o clock! I'll never get to school! I can't run THAT
fast!! I would have to have wheels to go that fast! I promised Toby I would
do better! WHATAMIGONNADO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

   "Serena, Serena, it's ok, it's ok relax! Jeez!" he took his hands off his
ears. "Here, I'll give you a ride. I know where your school is."

She stared at him as if he had just proclaimed that he was prince of earth.
"For real? YOU are going to give ME a Ride to SCHOOL!!!!! what did I ever
do to save you?"

  he smiled. "Never mind that. You can pay me back some time. but I have to
go to work any way and so it is better I am late an d   not you. My boss won't
fire or give me detention unless I am half an hour late."

She stared at Darien in disbelief. "This is so cool!" she jumped up and
ran across the street to his car. "But don't tell toby ok? I don't want him
to know I was being irresponsible and could have been late again, ok?"

His face slightly darkened at the mention of her boyfriend's name. 
"Ok, no problem." he jumped din and they were off.

   When they got to her school, she got out quickly with a minute to spare
before the bell would ring.

"Gee, thanks a lot Darien. I really owe you one for this."she said gracefully
as she was getting out of his car. And she turned around. "And..thanks
for making me feel a bit better a swell. I owe you for that too."

 He grinned. "Any time meatb.....Serena."
"Meatball head." She corrected him with a giggle. "I said it was ok for you
to call me that, remember? Now that you explained it, I don't mind it."

  He nodded. "Ok Meat ball head."

   She leaned over, gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and then ran through
the school gates. He rubbed his cheek a little. he drove off to work
smiling, feeling really good about himself.

   "Mondays can be really awful, but nothing like a Tuesday to
refresh the air." he said to himself.

   When Serena got home, she ran up the stairs, nearly killing Luna, who
had been sitting on the stairs, and ran to the phone by her bed. She looked
up Darien's number and rang it.

  After a few rings he answered. "hello?"

  "Darien, it's Serena." she said cheerily. 
Darien   w as really surprised to hear her calling him. >What next?< he thought.
"Yeah, what's up meat head?"

  "I really wanted to thank you for driving me to school. When Toby saw I
was a few seconds early than usual, he looked really pleased. I could tell
he had been thinking I had probably decided to skip school like a w imp. he
asked me out again!!!! So we're still together! Isn't that great! "

  Darien sat down, his face expressionless. he didn't really think it was
as good as Serena was thinking but he didn't want to rain on her parade.

  "Yeah, great Serena. Any time. Bye." he hung up. She was a bit surprised
but didn't think much of it.
 She rolled over in her bed to go to sleep, humming one of her favorite
Selena songs.

  "And what are you so dreamy about?" Luna demanded.

Serena sighed, still humming her song. "Toby asked me out again. So we're
still together! Luna..do you think that someday he'll ask me to marry
him?" she laughed. "Mrs. Serena Nikolas!" she fell back in bed laughing.
Luna sighed and rolled her eyes. >I wish she would be as wrapped up in
Fighting as she is on boys and high school< her friend thought.

   When Serena feel a sleep, she had a strange dream. She dreamed that she
was in a long white gown, standing in a room with mist. IT was dark almost
every where. But then the mist started to even cover the darkness. She
was in a garden somewhere. She could feel wind. She sat there trying to
determine if she was having a nightmare or not, when she saw someone walking
toward s  her.

  "Who's there?" she asked shakily. The figure paused. Then continued to
walk towards her. She backed away and looked at any where she could hide,
but all she saw was mist now. Nothing else. She could see stars shining 
through the mist that was snow over her head. She began to get worried that
she would suffocate if the mist kept building up.

  "Who are you?"

  "Serenity...." he said. It was a man obviously. She could hear a
strange music tune in the back ground. It sounded summoning. 

 The man was now in view. She could see he was wearing dark clothes
but his face or where his face should be, was hidden by the mist. Serena
felt like she should run. but the further she ran the less difference it
seemed to make. She knew she had been running several feet but every time
she looked behind her, he was right there, the same 8 foot difference.

 >This is silly< she thought and faced him. "Who are you?

  "Serenity..."'

  "That doesn't make sense. Who are you?"

  "Serenity..find the crystal."

  "What? What crystal?"

  "Help me find the crystal so I can set you free!"

  "What? What crystal? What are you talking about?"

  "Help me find the crystal and we can be free again."

   She started thinking he was crazy. But something kept nagging
her that he was serious. 

   She could hear women in the back ground chanting a rhyme to
the tune that kept going on.

  "I remember eyes that shine
That looked so hard back in to mine.
I've got the memory
So I'll set you free...."

    "Serenity...help me find the crystal!"

   "WHAT CRYSTAL! STOP acting so MYSTERIOUS! Just tell me!"

    "I remember eyes that shine,
That looked so hard back into mine.
Now I have got the memories
So now I'll set you free..."

   She could hear females chanting it over and over somewhere far 
in the background. Serena was starting to feel like it was in the air
being carried around her and this stranger like the mist. Maybe it
was in the mist.

     "The crystal will set us free......"

     "I remember eyes that shine,
    That looked so hard back into mine...
    Now I've got the memories
    So I'll set you free......

 
     "But please...you must remember who you are..."

      "I remember eyes that shine...
      That looked so hard back into mine....."

     "AND FIND THE CRYSTAL....."

      "WHAT CRYSTAL! WHO ARE YOU ALL!!!!"

      "Now I've got the memories....
      So I'll set you free....."

       "AND then we can be free again."

       "Now I've got the memories...
       So I'll set you freee..............."

       Something was trust into her hand. "Remember." And it all stopped.

      Serena suddenly felt like she was falling. Falling and
falling. The mist and the man disappeared and the voices faded to
oblivion. When she woke up,
she was on the floor. She sat up in a  daze.

 "That was SOME dream!" she rubbed her head. She felt her hand throb and
recalled in the dream the guy had thrust something into it. She held her
hand up to the light of the moon that shown into her room. There was a small
line of  as cut in her palm. "How on earth did I get that? No use worrying
about it now." she climbed lazily back into bed. But her hand suddenly
felt a sharp prick as it reached up to her pillow. She withdrew her hand
violently. "OUCH!" she reached for her lamp light chain and pulled it on.

    There was a rose on her pillow with a bit of blood on it's stem.

  This may be too corny, or too uneventful . I don't think there is going
too be much action in this story and if you are an action fan I am not
sure you will like it. It is mainly a story about Serena and Darien (My favorite
characters) I would like to thank profusely some people who have been
supporting me in my three stories. 
 Moon star, Jade, Razzberi, Lianne-sen, Jennifer Wand, Auston, Joel, 
Amanda, and Michelle Gazer. Thanks guys!!!!! "Vielen Danke" as they say in Germany. :)
Jade and Auston are working on a really nice funny story "Serena's Deal
with the enemy" and check out some of Jade's other stories. I highly
recommend "Tears of a Rose" :) 

My brother Joel has been working on his short and bitter sweet story
"Tragic Kingdom" if any one likes it, please e-mail him at the same address
I have because he would really like that.  Razz and Lianne......their
writings have inspired me to put any of my writings on here in the first place.
Particularly the encouragement of my good friend Razz. her letters since we
became friends a few months ago, have been the light of a mailbox. I share them
with my family and all her funny comments (all most all :)
Jennifer Wand has some lovely stories in this site. 

  I was meaning to have this chapter out last week with the third chapter of my
other two stories "Fool's Games" and "Can't Lie to My heart" but we were
havong soem computer problems. The computer soemhow didn't save my story and
I didn't discover that until it was too late to rewrite it. I have rewritten this
from memory as best as I can. I couldn't dfind the last chapter in my files and
I usually erase the old stories after I send them in becuase we have
disk space problems. So i thought I had sent it in already. But when I
saw the site on Sunday, I saw it wasn't there so.....it gave me a real
headache!!!! 

 On emor ething. The chant that is in the background in Serena's
dream at the end "I remember eyes that shine..etc etc etc etc 
is actually the chorus from a song I like by a group called the bangles
a song called "I'll Set You Free" and I was humming it when I wrote
the scene last time so I write it out thinking it was catchy.
Darien and Serena are goign to fall in love and the only thing keeping
them apart is the fact they are getting dreams of each other being
the moon princess and the prince of earth etc etc etc. So they think
they are looking for the right person, but they are lokign for the wrong
person because the right person is actually already there for them, but 
they don't realize that the person they are looking for is the same person
they thinki is the wrong person to share their lives with! (Any one getting
confused yet? You
ll get the idea as I go on. Now I"M confused! It's late here
and I AM GOING to bed!!!!!" :)
