Dalmatian
![](https://www.angelfire.com/ma/Charizard2000/Nintendogs/gamedalmatian.jpg)
Group: Working Group
Facts:
Dalmatians get their name from the country Dalmatia. (An
area in Croatia.) Although, their are questions about whether they actually
originated there, as their is some evidence to indicate they come from earlier
origins in other places, but not enough to make a definite conclusion. These
dogs were often used as "Coach dogs" meaning their job was to run along side
horse drawn carriages to keep the road ahead clear, and possibly help control
the horses at a full run. This may be where they got their association with
firemen, as they may have been Coach dogs for horse-drawn fire engines as well.
Dalmatians are generally friendly and playful dogs and are
good with children, although their high energy and playfulness makes them less
suited for toddlers. Dalmatians gained a huge surge of popularity with the
release of the One Hundred and One Dalmatians book, and even more
popularity with the release of the 1961 and 1996 movies. This caused concern
because people were afraid that, after seeing the movie, people would buy a
Dalmatian without knowing what the were getting themselves into. (The main
concern was the fact Dalmatians need a LOT of exercise and get lonely easily.)
It is not clear whether these concerns turned out to be correct, but their is
evidence that problems did occur with the release of the 1961 animated film.
A fun fact that you may not know: Everyone knows about
black-spotted Dalmatians, and many know about the more brown-colored
Liver-spotted Dalmatians, but did you know there are actually many other colors
that may turn up in the spots of a pure-bred Dalmatian? And there is even the
occasional long-haired variety! You can find out more by checking out this link:
