Nintendogs Breeds: E-L

German Shepherd:

Group: Herding Group

Facts:

German Shepherds were developed by Captain Max von Stephanitz in the late 1800s as an all-purpose working dog. And that they are! German Shepherds are common as police dogs, military dogs, search and rescue dogs, guard dogs, and guide dogs. The quick development of the German Shepherd breed is thanks to the schutzhund trial to test dogs of their abilities. Any dogs that could not pass the trial were not allowed to breed into the line.

The German Shepherd Dog is also known as "Deutscher Schäferhund" in Germany (Which is German Shepherd Dog in German) and Alsation in England. (This was due to anti-German feelings during WW I & II) There are long-haired and white German Shepherds, but they are not recognized as "acceptable" qualities by organizations such as the AKC. (Although there has been recent work done to get the White German Shepherd officially recognized as a separate breed of dog.)

Famous German Shepherds in Popular Culture:

  • Blondie - Adolf Hitler's pet.
  • Charlie - From the movie, All Dogs go to Heaven
  • Rin Tin Tin - Dog rescued in France by Lee Duncan who later starred in numerous movies. His legacy includes a TV series in the 1950s.
  • Strongheart - Early canine film star from such movies as, The Silent Call, and White Fang.

Group: Terrier Group

Facts:

Jack Russell Terriers were first bred in the 1800s by Revered Mr. John Russell. They were bred as foxhunting dogs that were very energetic, and with the courage to chase a fox that had taken cover underground back out of its hole without actually harming it. (Since the dog harming the fox was considered "unsporting" by hunters.)

There are actually several variations of the Russell Terrier breed. Because of this, there is continuing controversy of the exactly what a Russell Terrier is, and whether others should be considered unacceptable, or simply seperate breeds.

Famous Jack Russell Terriers in Popular Culture:

  • Wishbone - From the children's show, Wishbone
  • Milo - From the movie, The Mask.
  • Eddie - Owned by Martin Crane in the television series, Fraiser
  • Krypto - Superman's dog in the older DC Comics may have been a Jack Russell Terrier.
