Nintendogs Breeds: M-P

Miniature Dachshund:

Group: Hound Group

Facts:

Dachshunds may have first gotten their roots in Ancient Egypt, which features engravings of short-legged hunting dogs. The modern Dachshund, though, gets its roots from all over Europe. Dachshunds were commonly used in hunting badgers, foxes, rabbits, wild boar, and for tracking wounded deer.

Dachshunds were commonly viewed as a symbol of Germany, and thus fell out of favor during WW I & II. Things were so bad for them, that during WWI owners were actually encouraged to euthanize their dogs! Some Americans referred to Dachshunds as "Liberty Pups" during this time. The stigma associated with them quickly faded after WWII ended.
