Recoil Formula.
This formula is usable for both rifles and shotguns. The powder charge has a great deal of influence on recoil. A smaller faster burning powder charge producing the same velocity with the same bullet weight or shot charge will produce less recoil than a larger charge of slow powder.
A muzzle brake will reduce recoil at the terrible price of muzzle blast, which is worse than the recoil. Either way there is no free lunch when it comes to recoil.
The formula can be set up on MS Excel for easy calculations of recoil. Also a hand held calculator will do just fine. If you have a MS Excel program you can have my set up by e-mail.
