RED ROBIN'S WINTER

By Edna Huffaker

Red Robin and his wafe, Scarlet Robin were ready to fly south. The cold winds were already beginning to blow, and a few snow flakes were fluttering down.

Scarlet had fallen a week ago and had hurt her wing. She urged Red Robin to go with the other Robins who had gathered to fly south.

"I cannot leave you", said Red Robin to Scarlet. "We will stay together and somehow live through the winter."

"Oh, no...Please go with the others."

"No." said Red. So it was decided that they would brave the cold weather together.

Scarlet managed to fly with great difficulty to their nest high in the huge fir tree.

Red Robin gathered twigs and small branches and re-inforced the nest, to make it as snug as possible before the cold winter came. He also gathered seeds and stored them in an abandoned nest close to their nest.

A few days later they awakened shivering in the cold. The snow was falling and the North wind was sharp and cold. Red Robin flew to the nest near by and picked up seeds to give to Scarlet.

As the days passed, their supply of food dwindled and soon they were cold and hungry. Red Robin knew he would have to find food, or they would starve.

He flew all over the area and finally spotted a farm house not too far from their nest.

A little boy and his mother were making a snow man. Red Robin flew close and watched them.

The little boy, Jeremy, saw the roben red breast. "Mother, look! A robin! I thought they all went south!" he exclaimed.

"oh, my, the poor Robin looks so cold. I'll bet he's hungry too," said Mother.

She hurried into the house and returned with bread crumbs, which she scattered in the snow.

Red Robin made many trips to the nest with the crumbs the nice lady had given him.

Jeremy and his mothere put food out each day, and Red Robin and Scarlet were very thankful, as it kept them alive during the long, cold winter.

A few months later, the snow melted, the winds were warm, and the sun was shining.

Scarlet discovered that her wing had healed and she was now able to fly! They built a new nest in the same fir tree.

They flew south each fall, but always returned in the spring to the same fir tree where they could see Jeremy and his mother each day.
