BRAD THE TRAMP

BRAD THE TRAMP

There is a character who appears in perhaps more horror movies than we might dare imagine. A character that crops up where we don’t expect, a character which has such a strong essence, that I am surprised that he doesn’t star in his own film - ‘Brad the Tramp’. I first saw Brad the tramp wallowing on a bench, covered by newspaper in an attempt to keep himself warm in the harsh nights wind of Hillvalley. This was back in 1985 in a movie called Back To The Future, and although not a horror, Brad was introduced to the world, and was given that almost magical name - ‘Brad’ and he was seen once again in Back To The Future Part 2. A couple of years later, a strange character emerges from a bus station looking for the Bates Motel, the motel of Norman Bates the psychotic murderer. As the character looks for somebody to ask about directions, a couple of old tramps approach him, and one of them is Brad the tramp - clutching a whiskey bottle. This movie was titled Psycho : The Bates Motel, and after seeing Brad this second time, I went on with life with a renewed sense of peace and understanding. Last year, I bought a low budget movie called Drive In Massacre, and I was taken aback with glee when I saw a familiar character threatening to kill a little girl. Brad the Tramp was holed up in an old warehouse with nothing to eat, and only seeking shelter from the harsh outside world, when he took a little girl and threatened to kill her, obviously only seeking attention, and he narrowly escaped, feeling trapped in a trap filled world. Watching the John Carpenter classic ‘Body Bags’ the other day, I was happy to see Brad the Tramp asking for use of a public toilet at an out-of-town garage, but unfortunately, he was brutally killed near the end of the story, only to be seen once again in the recent WishMaster as a meddling old tramp once again. In a theatre in the movie 976 - Evil 2, he is found 'dwelling' behind some seats. Brad the Tramp - my favourite dirty bearded, word slurring whiskey drinking tramp has been sighted in many films over the last 13 years - always as the homeless idiot, and if you have any information on other sightings of Brad the Tramp, please, please, please tell me about it.
