Robert Englund on NEW NIGHTMARE and FREDDY VS JASON

Robert Englund breathes new life into Freddy Kruegar in the seventh Nightmare On Elm Street movie.

"This is Freddy taken to a whole new level. He’s considerably meaner and darker than the familiar wise-cracking Freddy which we’ve seen in the previous Elm Street films. I mean just take a look at the make up - it’s evolved considerably."

"I had told every one and their brother that The Final Nightmare was definitely the last film, but after I heard the initial pitch, I read the script and just knew that I had to make this movie. When I saw the film at the cast and crew screening, I realised that it’s a great movie which easily stands on it’s own merit - instead of merely being A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 7. And when anyone asks me why I returned as the character, I just say ‘hey it was worth doing - just like Godfather II was worthwhile for Coppola.’ When the film was first announced, there was one hell of a brouhaha because everyone expected it to be absolutely terrible, but it’s possibly considerably better than it’s predecessor."

"We actually stole the Toronto Film Festival. People gave up other screenings to get tickets for Nightmare because the film was being hailed as the coolest movie of the festival."

"In one version of the script, I descend into this hell and confront Freddy, who has apparently transformed into a massive red and green striped spider, then at the end of the film, I come back, crawl into bed beside my wife and say ‘Honey, I’m home...’ But that was considered too redundant because the story already had Heather’s journey into the netherworld, so those scenes were never filmed."

Robert Englund on Freddy Vs Jason (1995)

"Apparently it’s a really great script, but I’ve not read it or been approached. I am not a big fan of Friday the 13th, but I love the concept and look of Jason, and Kane Hodder is a great buddy. However, there’s something about those films which just hasn’t hooked me because the situations which place people in jeopardy have always seemed stupid."
Well, you can’t always be right can you...
