MY ADAMS RESEARCH EXCERPTS

"Genealogies of Marion Co. Families 1811-1900" which the Society published in 1997. Whenever I run into a site that looks as if it might have data on any of the 400+ families in "Big Blue" (it's Internet nickname since it's bound in blue), I often enter a query to see what's out there. Basically you have the same data on your site that we have in Big Blue re Adams except we've gone into more detail re all descendants of James Adams Jr. & Phoebe Davis - spouses, kids, etc. And, wherever possible, we've cross-referenced all spouses to their parents. Curently we're working on "Supplement to Genealogies of MCAR Families 1811-1900" primarily because we've discovered marital links both out-of-county and out-of-state that we were unaware of before 1997.

KY? If so, it's because I'm curious about the early apparent relationship between the Adams and the Wolf families who, we've been told, came in here together. Also curious about their possible relationship with the descendants of the Shawnee chief Peter Cornstalk (one of the Adams girls married a Peter Cornstalk, Shawnee or Cherokee-Shawnee chief, ca 1834 in Jacob Wolf's house on White River). You're aware, I'm sure, that this was Osage country before the Cherokee, Shawnee, Delaware, etc. moved here around 1810-12-plus.

RECOLLECTIONS OF EARLY DAYS IN MARION COUNTY ARKANSAS AS TOLD BY A LADY CONTRIBUTOR

A few items of interest of early days on White River. is given by Mrs. Polly Ann Hasket who came to Marion County with her parents Steve Tucker and Patsey (Barber) Tucker in 1842. She was born in Hickman County Tennessee February 15, 1828. When her parents came to Ark. they crossed White River at a place called Elizabeth and stopped 4 months in oil trough bottom. Whey they moved to the Rock Ribbed hills of Marion County, on their way they crossed Sycamore Greek and crossed Little Red River near where Clinton now stands and though the beautiful valley of Wileys Cave. Mrs. Hasket says that when they stopped in the now famous oil trough bottom there were only a few patches of land cleared, the remainder of the bottom was a dense cane brake. The trip from the bottom to Marion County was interesting. The pure air and fine scenery of the then wild woods was not easily forgotten. Only a settlers cabin was seen here and there. "The first deer I ever seen in my life was on a pine ridge below the present site of Clinton, but I did not know they were deer at the time. Me and my sister Nancy had rode ¼ mile in front of the wagon when 7 animals rose up from behind a big pine log and darted away. Two of them were large and carried great horns which sprangled out into sharp points. Two others were smaller and had no horns The other three were little fell over and spotted ail over. We girls were superstitious and foolish and thought the animals were big devils and little devils. We wheeled our horses around and galloped back until we met the wagon and told a frightful tale to father about seeing so many devils rise up from behind the pine log and run. But after we gave him a description of the beast he told us they were deer - two bucks - two does and three fawns. When we come Into Marion County I was 14 years old", said Mrs. Hasket. "It was here in this county I married Jess Hasket in 1850 but when we first went there in 1842 father bought a claim from John Jenkins who lived on Fallen Ash Creek 1 ½ miles east of Yellville. Jenkins had been digging a well and he contracted to finish the well for father but one day when he had gone down in the well to work he was overcome by foul air and died before he could be rescued." Mrs. Hasket in giving the names of settlers living in Flippin said that Mort Runnels, Jim Gage Jim McCabe and old man Tacket and Jimmie Lover and his wife Becca. These last lived on Fallen Ash Creek." Mrs. Hasket went on to say that their manner of living in those early days were plain and frugal. "We mostly lived on wild meat but used some pork ever now and then. When the settlers began to raise hogs they were compelled to use every precaution to prevent their destruction by wild animals. I remember when we put up a hog to fatten it had to be enclosed in a stout pen and the top of the pen covered with and we weighted these down with stones to prevent bear from scratching into the pen and killing the hog. When our family needed coffee and salt father would carry a lot of fur and peltry to Little Rock and make an exchange for these necessaries. We women made part of our wearing apparel with cards spinning wheel and hand loom. A few women would keep a web of cloth on hand for emergencies or in case the family should move away on short notice. Of course it was then like it is now somebody was on the move all the time. The majority of the men wore home made hats or caps. The latter was made of skins of coons or wild cat and worn with the tail hanging down at the back part of the neck. Abe Woods was the first man we got acquainted with after coming into Marion County. I well remember Uncle Tom Flippin father of Hon. W. B. Flippin. We lived on his farm awhile. One Sunday evening Uncle Tom took a notion to select a place for the burial of his body after death. He requested his wife to accompany him and his wife invited me to go with them and I accepted the invitation. Mr. Flippin went to a spot of ground where there was one grave that of a child, where he selected a spot of ground to suit him and made a mark on a black Jack sapling to indicate where he desired his mortal remains to rest and when the old man was called away into the chilly arms of death he was laid to rest on this same spot of ground. This grave yard is known now as the Flippin Graveyard. I remember that while we lived on the Flippin farm 10 Indians came there one evening on their way to Batesville. They said they were from the Indian territory and ask permission to stay all night. Mr. Flippin gave his permission and allowed them to cook, eat and sleep in a small log hut that stood near his dwelling. The party were composed of men, boys and one woman. The chief of the band was an old man. W. B. Flippin and Agnis his wife daughter of Straud Adams gave them some provisions which pleased them so well that they would bow their heads and grunt. When these Indians got ready to retire for the night they placed their bows and arrows in a row in the cabin and spread their blankets down on the floor and lay down on them like a lot of children." In speaking of old times Mrs. Hasket relates an amusing anecdote of Dr. Cowdry who came to Yellville about 1836. "But It is only hearsay to me", said Mrs. Hasket, "but the settlers said it was true. Many of them laughed and told it after we came into Marion County. Dr. Cowdry was well known along White River from Batesville to the Mo. state line as an honest and an able physician and had a host of friends. Sometimes he was known to visit the sick 75 miles distant. Though while he knew a great deal of the practice of medicine and surgery and alleviated the suffering of the afflicted far and near but he had no experience in growing corn and did not understand the formation of a ear of corn. One spring season Cowdry’s wife who was a daughter of a man by the name of McCubbin who built a little mill at a spring below mouth of big North Fork - knew something of the art of farming planted a few rows of corn in the garden. One day after the shoots had formed on the stocks the doctor went into the garden and saw the shoots and supposing they were suckers and detrimental to the formation of roasting ears pulled them all off and carried them into the house to show his wife. Laying them down he told her they were suckers and he had snatched them off so that the ear could form. His wife was so astonished that she threw her hands up and exclaimed "why doctor you have ruined my roasting ear patch for them are the shoots that the ear is formed from". But Cowdry refused to believe it until his wife went on to explain the matter to his satisfaction then he gave it up. This incident shows that the most intelligent are liable to be mistaken in some things once and a while." Continuing Mrs. Hasket went on to say that her father lived a while on Isaac Wilson’s mother’s farm on Crooked Creek two miles below Yellville. "If you remember" said she "Isaac Wilson kept a hotel In Yellville before the war. Mrs. Wilson was a well to do woman. Among her stock was several fine milk cows which kept fat on the cane in the creek bottoms. Mrs. Wilson allowed us to milk the cows and I well re-collect what a quantity of nice butter and cheese we made from the milk of these cows. Mrs. Wilson said that she had suffered a great deal from the depredations of wild beast before we went there. The old lady said that a few months before we went there a panther came into the yard one night and went up a persimmon tree that stood near the house. The tree had a bushy top and being in the fall of the year the limbs were loaded with possom fruit. The panther cut some awful diaoes while in the tree by screaming, growling and breaking off the limbs by its weight. Mrs. Wilson said that she and the other members of the family were bad scared. Finally the ferocious beast leaped out of the tree and went away. Next morning the ground under the persimmon tree was covered with persimmons that the panther had knocked off."

The above was written in 1901. Please note in the sketch that Fallen Ash Creek runs into White River on the opposite from Cotter or just above. The Flippin Barrens lies between White River and Yellville. The Flippin Graveyard is on the summit of a low wooded hill ¼ mile north east of the town of Flippin. This August 16, 1907.

One of the oldest citizens of Protem, living at the present writing is W. J. (Bill) Adams, son of Benoni and Elizabeth (Sutherland) Adams and was born in Hickman County, Tennessee, May 16, 1838. Benoni Adams, his father, was born in 1809, his grandfather, Laborn Adams, was born in ... ... writing is W. J. (Bill) Adams, son of Benoni and Elizabeth (Sutherland) Adams and was born in Hickman County, Tennessee, May 16, 1838. Benoni Adams, his father, was born in 1809, his grandfather, Laborn Adams, was born in Virginia. Benoni Adams and his wife left the state of Tennessee and moved into Missouri and settled in Ripley County when Bill was 6 years old. In a few years afterward his parents moved into Howell County where in 1859 on February 10 Bill Adams and Miss Sarah E. Herrean were married. Mr. Adams by request of the writer furnished him with the sad details of the killing of his father and brother, Edward, in the month of January, 1864. The two bodies received interment in the Spring Creek graveyard. They were buried in the same grave but in separate coffins." Mr. Adams continuing said, "Beside myself and brother Edward, there were three other brothers of us. Their names are Houston, Thomas Franklin and Layfayette. ...

"In the year 1836 several of the Adams family who were relatives of my parents, Mr. Samuel Orr and Mrs. Catherine (Adams) Orr, paid us a visit where we lived near the mouth of Big North Fork and remained with us a few days to look at the county. Catherine Orr, my parents; I and my sister, Mary A., and brother Jim Orr; Andrew and Wilson Adams, who were brothers of my grandfather, old Jimmie Adams. Then there were Strather, George, and John Adams, who were brothers of my mothers. There were also Warren and Wilson Adams, who were sons of Andrew Adams. The two last named lived with my grandfather, old Jimmie Adams. There were 12 of us in the party and I recollect that I was a few months less than 12 years old.

... strange incidents of hunting that I have gathered from the old timers is the following. John Davis, son of Ira J. Davis, said that Isaac Adams, an old settler and hunter of Newton County, Ark., had several sons. Among them were John, William, Dan, and Matthew. ... interesting account one day in April, 1895, but the incident occurred many years before that. "One time," said Mr. Sullivan, "while I and Bill Adams and Jim Adams, son of Bill, were on a camp hunt on the head of the Cardwell Hollow that runs into Elbow Creek I shot a deer’s neckbone off or hock as some call . When I had reloaded my gun again I shot it in the hip, then the deer hobbled near 30 yards and lay down. At this time Jim Adams come up and shot the deer also and as soon as we both reloaded our rifles each of us shot it simultaneously. My ball hit it in the breast and Jim’s ...

Near the mouth of this little water course lives George Adams whose residence stands on the east bank and a short distance above Garrison Post Office. Mr. Adams has lived here a number of years and his wife was principally reared on Swan Creek and she furnished the writer with a few items of interest in the following way. "My maiden name was Jane Nance. My fathers given name was Samuel, my mothers maiden name was Susan Adams. I was born in Lawrence County, Mo. August the 2ed 1845. My parents moved to Swan Creek in Christian County, Mo. when I was a small child. In giving a little war time incident of how a citizen concealed his gold she said that her uncle Mathias Adams who lived on Swan Creek a few miles above Swansville was a well to do man and owned a fine bunch of stock when the war broke out and sold it all ...

Turnbo Manuscripts ... gives an amusing story of a lot of boys going out on a coon hunt one night and how it turned out. Mrs. King said that her grandfather, Jimmie Adams, was among the first settlers in the neighborhood of the mouth of the Big North Fork of White River. He built the first mill in that section . Josiah Adams, was an older son than John and Matthew.

Here Is another story which we will give before closing this chapter. Matthew Adams, son of Isaac Adams, lived south of the Buffalo fork of White River and near the head breaks of Big Piney Creek that flows into the Arkansas River. There was a cavern situated in the head of a rough gulch which lead into a deep hollow with steep hillsides. The cave was also near a high precipice. Adams had hunted all over this part of the country and was well acquainted with all the surroundings. On reaching the cave the hunter prepared his torch (when a bear approached. He evidently wounded it). Without thinking what he was doing and fully believing Bruin would overhaul and kill him before he could reach safety, Adams ran headlong down the hill toward the cliff. The bear when it emerged from the cave did not pursue the frightened hunter but ran in an opposite direction. His adventure was told to Tom Davis and John Claiborne who went and followed the wounded bear and killed it. Three days after the bear was dead Adams went back to the scene of his scare and recovered his rifle.

The land where my grandfather Orbie Barber settled on Barber Creek is known, now as the George Adams place. Among Barber’s children were four boys whose names were William, Robert, Henry and John. These boys soon learned to be good hunters.

... occurred at Shawnee town, now Yellville, Ark., after the greater number of Indians had gone west. Mrs. Holt said that her grandfather, Jimmie Adams, settled in the river bottom 2 ½ miles above big North at an early date. Some years after his arrival here he built a little mill on a small stream ... ... means to buy bread not to toll it but put a tall dish full in his sack and grind it free of toll." Mrs. Holt went on to say that before Mr. Adams built this mill Jess Everette built a little mill on Mill Creek just south of the Indian village where Daniel Wickersham built his mill afterward. ...

Genealogy). He married REBECKAH BASEDEN 1639 in Hartford, Hartford CT, the widow of Mr. Greenhill. Mentioned in The Catalogue of First Puritan Settlers, R. R. Hineman, first published in Hartford 1846, p. 12: Adams, Jeremy, of Hartford, 1639, to purchase corn with Capt. Mason of the Indians, in 1638--a juror and deputy. Jeremy's name is inscribed on the Monument erected by the Ancient Burying Ground Association of Hartford, in memory of the First Settlers of Hartford.

The best evidence that Matthew Wilson and Catherine Hubbard's daughter married James Adams is found by court action in Deed Book A, page 151, Jan 14,1805, of Christian Co KY. It appoints James McGinley of Adams Co PA as Power of Attorney to collect all due James and Agnes Adams from the estate of Matthew Wilson of Adams Co PA, father of the said Agnes. Further confirmation that Daughter, Agnes, married James Adams is found in DAR records 502441 (4/18/64), 609995 (10/15/76), and 644353 (2/1/80). Also of interest to you, No. 056755 (5/4/06) record which is for Fannie Leonora Miller Vawter who comes down through Elizabeth Wilson and James Maginly. Our family records have not indicated that Matthew was a minister. I have seen a Matthew Wilson mentioned as a minister in the book: THE SCOTCH-IRISH OF COLONIAL PENNSYLVANIA, by W. F. Donaway but got the idea that he was older than our Matthew. Many descendants of James and Agnes are provided in the book: DESCENDANTS OF JAMES AND AGNES (WILSON) ADAMS WITH FIFTY-SEVEN ALLIED FAMILIES, Leona Adams Loviska. Marion Co AR Newspaper Abstract 1889

James Adams, who is better known as "Turkey Jim" was arrested and tried before Squire Thompson in DeSoto township last Saturday on a charge of selling whiskey without license. Adams submitted his case and was fined $200 and sentenced to imprisonment in the county jail for 30 days. He was placed in jail last Saturday evening and during the night made his escape.

Incomplete research indicates that Robert C. Adams was born April 14, 1840, in Tennessee and was brought to Arkansas in 1845 by his father, John W. Adams.

The clipping, edited and slightly condensed, reads as follows:

"Robert C. 'Uncle Bob' Adams is one of the few remaining confederate veterans who enlisted from this county and saw service on the fields of carnage during the Civil War.

"On Aug. 4, 1861, Co. B, 8th Arkansas, left Jacksonport aboard the steamer Mary Patterson, Capt. Morgan Bateman, bound for Pocahontas. On the trip up Black River, Eph Comer, a member of the company, fell overboard near Elgin and it is not known whether his body was ever recovered.

"From Pocahontas, Adams' reginment went to City Point on the Mississippi, and from there by boat to Columbus, Kentucky, where they shipped by rail to Bowling Green via Humboldt, Tennessee. About the time of the fall of Fort Donaldson [February 16, 1862], they were transported by rail to Nashville and then to Murphreesboro.

"Uncle Bob was in some of the worst battles of the war and sustained only one wound of any consequence, having been shot in the leg. He was taken prisoner on January 1, 1863, but in April of that year was exchanged and permitted to join his regiment at Bellbuckle, Tennessee.

"During the battle of Murphreesboro, Col. John G. Fletcher of Little Rock was in command of the 6th Arkansas. He was wounded in a leg and a captain was also hit and lost an arm. Adams was detailed to nurse them.

"When Company B left Jacksonport, it contained 106 officers and men. As of now, only three are living, including Adams, J. S. Covey of Sandtown, and W. J. Sherrill of Russellville.

"Captain W. S. Smalley of Oil Trough was at one time in command of the company. Tom Bateman was 1st Lieutenant and M. D. Hulsey was 2nd lieutenant. Among those from this vicinity who were in the company were Bud Burns, Ceph Drennen, Dick Stephens, Tom Stephens, Louis Allwhite, Marin Mann, Henry Fortenberry, John Arnold, Dick McHenry, and Tom Wallace.

" Adams died December 28, 1935, and is buried in Blue Springs Cemetery.

The roster list of Fristoe's Regiment was copied from National Archives microfilm. Some names were taken from other sources, such as family history records. The transcribers I and J were almost indistinguishable and these letters should not be viewed as entirely accurate, especially when used in initials. Corrections have been made to spelling of names when confirmed by other records. The roster is incomplete due to poor record keeping at that time of the war. The roster list contains several fathers and sons, as well as several brothers. The youngest known soldier was 15 and the oldest 49.
