Beginning drawing, basic shape shading and design.

Topics to be covered
The Study of basic pencil, charcoal, exploring shape, notan, quick sketch, technique tricks, and creating effective compositions, portraits, the body in motion, perspective and critiquing.

Goals
On completion of this course the student will have improved in their ability to interpret what they see into mental shapes they can put on paper, draw with various techniques and mediums, shade, and create texture. They will have an increased knowledge of perspective, how to frame a picture and how to look at their world and create their own techniques.

Time Structure:
1.    Introduction, syllabus and materials, value scale, notan, make a squinting   

       tool, gray scale, proper hand position, how to support you’re drawing so

       there is no distortion, drawing from the  shoulder, whole arm scribble, how

       to frame, practice on shapes, the use of art journals, sketching techniques.

2.       Loose sketch, basic shapes and shading and erasing techniques, vanishing lines, quick sketch and scribble techniques. Learn the technique of shading and composition using different lines. Look at the shapes of things and where you will place them on a page for an effective composition.

3.        Technique glancing, scribble line, gesture, mass gesture, draw your hand.

4.       Slant technique, Triangulation, practice on people and duck.

5.       Technique envelope, Use all techniques learned to do a black and white still life in class. This may take several lessons

6.       Faces: A basic demonstration of the human face, ˝ class pose for a portrait, pay attention to the shape of the face and eyes. Notice how much space is between each feature and pay attention to shadow. Draw tiny lines through the face and put the shape of the eyes lips nose on the lines, study where the shadows are.

7.       The human body (no nudes) Demonstration follow along, demonstrate bodies in motion, and look at some of Michelangelo’s Botacelli's art, bodies in motion, with people doing different activities.

8.       Study perspective vanishing point and horizon. Draw a still life using perspective. Show some pictures of Landscapes. Start a landscape using your new knowledge of perspective in pencil.

9.       Critiques: Museum visit. From here we go into the concepts of color and the different mediums used beginning with colored pencil and graduate to the  INTERMEDIATE SYLLABUS
