FOR THE BEAUTY OF WINTER
glass pool, icy through
blankets of white
frozen dew
tinkling ice
frozen swords
in solid guise
hanging from my
tinseled roof
sparkling diamonds
showing proof
that winter has its worth
if not for me
than for children
or just for beauty

Snow
Silent snow
white drifter
falling from
a sugar sifter
frozen beauty
fantasy lifter
cloaking the earth
lace blanket shifter
floating frenziedly
to the forest floor
piling high
gathering more
like Manna
from heavens door
Fat flurried flakes
whirling 'round my core
bring joy to children
rich or poor
I ponder
as I watch your purity
when through the glass
I stare at thee
I think of the fun
you've given me
When I a child
played so free
but driving
in the sloshy stuff
makes life harder
cold and rough
but your beauty unsurpassed
is enough to make it up
may I put in one request
I feel four inches is enough

Toboggan Escapade
It was a silent starlit night
the moon was full and solid white
the silent snow lay four feet thick
the midnight sky played not a trick
but scattered diamonds on the snow
excitement in our hearts did grow
when teenage friends came in a truck
toboggans and kids from home to pluck
we all took off without a care
the wind cut through our winter wear
we found a hill of perfect slant
we each took turns exuberant
to slide and glide into the forest dark
we turned the forest into a wintery park
taking turns we laughed with glee
until Pete Fox collided into a pine tree
he was ok but we went home
35 years later I share this winter poem

FIRST SNOW
A California coastal girl
Long Beach born and raised
the only season to unfurl
A little fog or rain un praised
What we knew of seasons
we found in a picture book
then moma found some reasons
to move away, so off we took
to the Sierra Nevada range
above San Bernardino
a new home to arrange
among the forest glow
I was eleven years of age
when we moved to this wonderland
as if sprung from a city cage
I explored and climbed the rockey land
Then came the morning I'll not forget
in earliest December
I straightened my bed just a bit
and a little prayer did render
I always woke at the crack of dawn
and looked out from my window
I would sometimes see a fawn
or a scolding Jay on a branch below
but this time when I looked out
every thing was fleecy white
I in a frenzy of flaps did shout
and ran for a closer look at the sight
Through and through I was thrilled
I ran to see each white capped thing
To the bone I was chilled
but I could only dance and sing
This was my winter wonderland
no one could take my joy
Oh the snowman that I planned
and the tobaggan I'd employ
This was a world I'd never known
filled with sounds and smells so new
icicles to the ground had grown
frozen ponds would lose their hue
Large flakes would float into my face
leaving an icy tickle
and on my tounge would melt its trace
I would laugh and giggle
I loved discovering the snow
each season brought me lessons
My friend nature is nice to know
In her God brings me blessings
