Another two-light window which is rather unique in its design can be found in the Northwest Street in Birgu (see photo). It is datable to the fifteenth century and was reutilized in a house from the sixteenth century. It probably came from Sicily. Its Gothic arcading supports a string- course. Birgu used to have more of these windows, which almost all followed the tradition of the earliest two-light window in the Castellan’s house at Fort St. Angelo.
Other architectural elements in Birgu are
very much similar to the ones in Mdina. The streets are also narrow and the
buildings had friezes or string-courses marking the division of the ground and
first floor. But the urban features of Birgu were also altered by rebuilding and
remodeling, which took place during the time of the Knights of St. John.
