Ah, Lita. The strong, practical, and extremely romantic sailor scout. Lita (or Mako if you prefer) is the most real of all of the senshi. I don't mean this in the sense that you're going to see her walking down the street someday (although you might), but rather in the sense that her personality is the most rounded. Lita's parents died in a plane crash when she was young, and she has lived alone ever since. As a result, she was a very unhappy person for a long time. She was in a gang, she fought viciously, and (in the Japanese manga) even smoked. Becoming a Sailor Scout ment a lot to her. Not only did it give her a place to belong, but it also gave her a family. In the Manga, Bunny describes Mako as being "everyone's big sister". This is her way of making herself feel happy and useful. The other girls love her and rely on her in times of trouble, or when they're really hungry.
As a scout, Sailor Jupiter falls into the role of "Queen's Own". This means that she is the personal protector of the Moon Princess. This is easily seen in both the anime and the manga. She's almost always with Bunny and usually is saving her. In the manga, Jupiter is actually named as the "Sailor of Protection" (as opposed to "Sailor of Wisdom", "Sailor of Combat", "Sailor of Love", etc.) This protective aspect of her personality may also be a throwback to her parental loss.
One of the major differences between manga Lita and anime Lita is her views on boys. In the anime, she always thinks that boys look like her old boyfriend (or sempai), and falls in love at least once an episode. This is known as being boy-crazy. The manga Lita, however, is romantic. This means that she dreams of true love, knights in shining armor, castles and dragons and the whole bit, but is not activly searching for love. She seems to have all that she needs as a sailor soldier.
Overall, Lita is my favorite sailor. Her good spirit, kind personality, and really cool powers (Earth-based) make her a unique and fun character. She is not only everybody's big sister, but also everybody's support and cheering squad. Jupiter will always be there, no matter what.
