December 1, 2002. Today Michelle Kwan qualified for the Grand Prix Final, even though she has only skated in one Grand Prix event this season. The Grand Prix figure skating competitions are a series of competitions that are held all over the world. To qualify, a skater must have a certain number of points by the end of the Grand Prix season. All figure skaters that have qualified, have skated in a number of these competitions and the total of their points made them eligible. Only the top six skaters in each figure skating category are allowed to go on to compete in the Grand Prix Final.

Michelle skated in one Grand Prix event this season, which was Skate America, and did so only because she was asked to by the US figure skating association after Sarah Hughes was injured. Michelle won that competition, earning 12 points.

Because of a bizarre set of circumstances involving another Amercian figure skater who was not able to skate at a European event because of a visa problem that prohibited her from entering that country, Michelle ended up being the sixth skater to be eligible. The top six female figure skaters eligible to skate are:

1.Sasha Cohen USA 24 pts.

2.Yoshie Onda JPN 21 pts.

3.Viktoria Volchkova RUS 19 pts.

4.Irina Slutskaya RUS 16 pts.

5.Fumie Suguri JPN 14 pts.

6.Michelle Kwan USA 12 pts.

As of this date, December 3, 2002, no one is positive that Michelle will compete in the GPF, as she hadn't planned on skating in any of these competitions at all this year. Hopefully we will know soon, and this site will be updated as soon as we get word. Check back often!

February 1, 2003 - Because Michelle hadn't planned on skating in any Grand Prix event, she definately hadn't planned on skating in the Grand Prix Final (GPF). But because Michelle so graciously accepted the USFSA's invitation to fill in for Sarah Hughes, she ended up qualifying for the GPF by a fluke. Her fans and foes alike have been waiting and watching to see if Michelle would compete in St Petersburg, Russia. But with The World Figure Skating Championships only a few weeks after the GPF, Michelle has decided to concentrate on competing at Worlds and will not compete at the 2003 GPF.
