Michelle as a Child
July 7, 1980 began like any other day in Torrence California. Pregnant women would go into labor and some would give birth. Little did Danny and Estella Kwan know that this seemingly normal happy event, would change their lives and the face of figure skating forever. This was the day they
gave birth to their third and last child, who they would name Michelle Wing Kwan. The name Michelle, the feminine name for Michael means "Who is like God?"
The Kwan's worked hard and lovingly raised Michelle along with her older siblings Karen and Ron, to "work hard, have fun and be yourself." Brother Ronny loved hockey and his sisters would often go to watch him play. One day when Michelle was five years old, she and Karen decided they too wanted to skate.
Danny and Estella, being the loving parents that they are, allowed Karen and Michelle to rent skates and give it a try. They fell in love with figure skating, and from that time on the Kwans would sacrifice their time and money to allow their daughters to train in a sport that they were obviously good at and cherished.
When
Michelle was six years old, she, like many Americans watched the 1988 winter Olympics, where figure skating is one of the most popular events. As she sat in awe of fellow Californian Brian Boitano skating his heart out and winning the Gold, a seed was planted in her heart..she too would someday compete in the Olympics and win a Gold medal.
