Unconditional Love

in the present and in the past,
but the love my pets have shown me
is a love that seems to last.
My pets always understand
whenever I am feeling low,
and they are right by my side
unlike friends who come and go.
They ask so very little from me
and give so much back in return,
and it often makes me wonder
why humans can never learn.
I'm sure folks might think it's odd
that a pet can mean so much,
but until you've held one in your arms
your heart has not been touched.
Perhaps if you ever get lonely
and seek the companionship of a pet,
you'll know what I am talking about
and like me you'll have no regret.
Just look into those trusting eyes
then very soon it will all begin,
and then you too will find the love
that will last you until the end.
