Happy New Year !
Rosh Hashanah literally means "head of the year."
It is the Jewish New Year .
In the Hebrew Bible, Rosh Hashanah
has two distinct names. The first is "the Day of Remembrance,"
which alludes to the central theme of the holy days as a time devoted to memory.
We recall our deeds during the past twelve months, even as God scrutinizes
our behavior for the past year.
This theme is reinforced by the "Book of Life," which contains
the record of each person's deeds. During the "Ten Days of
Repentance," commencing with Rosh Hashanah and culminating ten days later
on Yom Kippur , God decides our fate for the coming year. Each word, each
deed is carefully recorded , which remains open throughout these days. There
are three actions that can help to sway the decree: Repentance, Prayer and
Righteous Acts, especially charity.
Since Rosh Hashanah is viewed as the birthday of
the world, the sounding of the shofar is our way of celebrating God's coronation
as the Creator. The shofar recalls the near sacrifice of Isaac on Mount
Moriah, and the awesome revelation at Mount Sinai. Above all, the shrill,
quivering blasts of the ram's horn awaken us from our complacency, and remind us
that we must right the wrongs we have committed during the past year.
Festive meals in the home feature bits
of apple dipped in honey. This ritual expresses our hope and prayer for a
sweet new year.
It begins with a festive meal before sunset.......
prayer, reflection and renewal
Our fate for the new year will be sealed .and we will then go home and break the
fast.
Hear our prayer.
We have sinned before Thee.
Have compassion upon us and upon our
children.
Help us bring an end to pestilence,
war, and famine
Cause all hate and oppression to
vanish from the earth
Inscribe us for blessing in the Book
Of Life.
Let the new year be a good year for us.
