Sniper Tactics

The tactics of the sniper vary depending on the type of mission he is preforming. Before the mission the sniper has to coordinate his movements with all of his possible support groups, such as mortar platoons and other sniper teams. Then they have to get inserted into the mission area, either through helicopter or by foot. The sniper should always know exactly where the team is going, what the terrain will be like, and what the FFP ( Forward Firing Position) will look like. On the way to the FFP, the sniper must take every step with consideration. He must move quietly, taking short breaks to stop and listen, and plan the next move. And when crossing fields with little coverage from foliage, they must low crawl across them. The ghillie suit ( see clothing) should worn during the stalk and while in position. Once in position, the sniper team must remain quiet, and move the least possible. The sniper and spotter should change roles every half hour. The spotter should keep watch with his spotting scope, while the sniper watches through his rifle scope or binoculars. They could be in the FFP for days, so a good hide should be made. Hides can be made by simply digging a shallow trench to lie in, or can be complex fighting holes complete with overhead cover or sleeping areas. Any sort of hide must be completely camoflaged with natural foliage. Remember, change the foliage often, as it dies within days and changes colors. After the kill is made, the team must leave no evidence of their being there. Everything should be cleaned up and the area sanitized. On the return to base, the sniper team must take the same precautions as they took getting to the FFP.

Here are some quick movement tips:

-When crossing through forests, try to avoid dried sticks and leaves. In a forest, complete silence while walking is almost impossible. For the best movement technique, try to avoid large concentrations of dried leaves and fallen sticks, and walk on stones or softer ground, but do not leave any tracks.

-When crossing streams, cross at a bend in it and in deep shadow. Also cross at a perpindicular line. If you do have to walk along a stream, keep to the sides of it, and don't lift your feet out of the water, but slide them along the bottom.

-When crossing fields, always wear a ghillie suit and stay low.

-Right before reaching your FFP, regardless of the terrain, crawl into position. Never walk into it, even if in heavy cover or in a forest.

This is only a brief look at the tactics of the sniper. Check in at a later time.
