A target indicator is anything a sniper does or fails to do that will reveal his position to an enemy. A sniper has to know and understand these indicators and their priciples if he is to keep from being located and also that he may be able to locate the enemy. He also has to be able to read the terrain for the best concealment and for his dress camoflage. Sound is sound created by movement of equipment and yourself. The enemy may dismiss some sounds as natural, but speaking is a definite human sound. To avoid sound the sniper should walk slowly and carefully, and equipment should be quieted. Movement is another key indicator. The human eye is naturally drawn to movement, and only stationery objects can remain undetected. Slow, deliberate movements are needed. Improper camoflage is divided into three groups: Shine; such as that reflected off lenses and equipment, Outline; the outline of the body and especially the head and this must be broken up, and Contrast with the background; which means improper colors that do not match the natural colors of the area.
