Weapons of the Sniper
The sniper uses either a bolt-action rifle or a semi-automatic rifle. Most snipers use the bolt-action, since these are extremely dependable, accurate, and simple. The United States Marine Corps. snipers use the US M-40A1 bolt rifle, which is a Remington 700 action, McMillan stocks, Leupold or Unertl scopes, and a heavy barrel. This rifle fires a 7.62 x 51mm cartridge. The M-40A1 evolved from the Remington 700 rifle, which was used by Marine snipers during the Vietnam War. After the war, the Corps. kept the basic 700 model and fine-tuned it into the M-40A1. The U.S. Army uses the M-21, M-24, and M-25. The M-24 is similar to the M-40A1, while the other two are accurized M-14s from the Vietnam era. These are capable of firing accurately at about one-thousand yards. My favorite sniper is the Heckler & Koch PSG-1 (Pictured below), which is a semi-automatic rifle, and a very expensive one. This rifle also fires a 7.62 x 51mm cartridge, and is said to be the finest sniper rifle ever assembled.
Another class of sniper rifles are ones that fire .50 cal. ammunition. These are extremely useful weapons, as they have the ability to not only knock out enemy soldiers, but large aircraft or vechicles if the opportunity arrived. They are also capable of long ranges, over two-thousand yards. But the drawbacks are that these beasts are heavy and cumbersome to use. The McMillan M-88 is a .50 cal. sniper rifle which is being used by the Navy SEALs. Other .50's include the Barrett M-82 and the Pauza.
