Treeski - AREAS-WEST page. Great treeskiing areas in the west.

AREAS - WEST

Chip in Blue Sky Basin, Vail

Huge mountains with forests of evergreens, aspens, and others generally yield wider spaces between trees for a multitude of treeskiing adventures. With such a variety of options available, freshies can usually be had in secret stashes days after the last storm.

CALIFORNIA

skiheavenly.com - Almost the entire mountain is a treeskier's paradise. Try virtually anywhere off the Sky Express lift, Milky Way Bowl, or Dipper Express. The possibilities here are almost limitless.

COLORADO

aspens

beavercreek.com - For steep and nasty, go to Royal Elk Glade or try Thresher Glade. For something a little more tame, head to Overshot off of Primrose.

breckenridge.com - "Got a powder day on your hands? Try The Burn - there are countless pockets and stashes that can last longer than almost anywhere else on the mountain." (From an old trail guide.) The area around Chair 6 is also good and it is generally one of the least crowded lifts on the mountain.

coppercolorado.com - The Enchanted Forest is aptly named. Glade 17 contains some tight trees. Also explore Copper Bowl and Spaulding Glades.
The Black Forest at Keystone

keystoneresort.com - "The Outback and tree skiing are synonymous - perhaps The Outback defines it. Tree-filled glades protect powder stashes for treeskiers long after the snow is packed on other runs". (Also from an old trail guide.) The Wildwoods side tends to get bumbed and tracked up quicker than the Black Forest side. You can see The Grizz on the map, but you won't be able to find it looking from North Peak. A great section is to the left of Oh, Bob.

skimonarch.com - There are some nice tree shots off of the Garfield Lift and to skier's right of Slo-Motion, but other sections can be found, including to the left of Picante and between Upper & Lower Hall's Alley and Bs Bash.

The Shadows at Steamboat
steamboat-ski.com - World renound for it's tree skiing, Steamboat will satisfy every treeskier. A "must do" is the famous Shadows which contain widely spaced aspen. Due to the natural placement of fir and spruce trees, Christmas Tree Bowl is a double black diamond paradise. Short but sweet glades can be found in the Morningside Park area.

Blue Sky Basin, Vail vail.com - Take some time to explore Shangri-La and Shangri-La Glade, but don't stay too long. Take your lunch and head back to Blue Sky Basin's 520 acres of gladed and natural terrain. This area's awesome! 3 detach quads, a big cornice, and tons of trees. They even groom a few trails through the trees. Champagne Glade consists of smaller, more widely spaced pines. Jump off the Lover's Leap cornice and head down into Iron Mask, Little Ollie, or Heavy Metal for some tighter lines. The drainage ditch at the bottom on the way to Pete's Express is also a lot of fun.

skiwinterpark.com - Parsenn Bowl has some good shots, but it's a pain getting back to the top due to the lift configuration. Head over to Vasquez Ridge and enter a gate on the left just before you go down Stagecoach. It starts off mellow, but soon gets steep and tight in some spots. Many other stashes can be found off the Pioneer Express due to the lift's lack of crowds.

MONTANA

bigmtn.com - Evan's Heaven, Good Medicine, Langley, anywhere off of Gray Wolf, all over Hellroaring Basin, ... Get the picture?

NEW MEXICO

Ski Santa Fe
skisantafe.com - From Cornice to Sunset, drop in almost anywhere. Under Chair 3 lies a vast expanse of fairly mellow glades to steep chutes. Check with Ski Patrol before ducking the rope and heading out to the Big Tesuque Bowl for a fantastic view and some sweet glades. Even though the runout is long and you have to hitch a ride back up, it's worth at least one run.

OREGON
skihood.com - You can't really tell it from the map, but some great lines can be found in the Hood River Express area. The trees are generally widely spaced with mellow terrain, but there are some steep drops.

UTAH
thecanyons.com - Lower elevation means more trees and there are lots of places to treeski around here. The Aspens is a great area solely comprised of, you guessed it, aspens. Somewhat tightly spaced and an easy grade make this a sweet playground on a powder day, or any day. Besides the marked areas on the map, ther are many places to explore, esp. off the Tombstone Express.

parkcitymt.com - P C is another resort where most of the area is at a relatively low elevation. McConkey's Bowl has a nice section of trees that are moderately tight and steep at the top. Go about half way down Tycoon and cut left for some wider spaced pines. The same can be found over on Jupiter Bowl. Some sweet lines through the pines are between Jupiter Access and Thaynes Lift. There's a slight uphill grade at the top of the access, but it's worth it. Once on the trail, turn right into the trees whenever you want, but don't wait too long. Halfway down, cross Keystone and keep going. Between Silver Skis and Shaft is a nice, moderately pitched aspen glade.

trees at Snowbird
snowbird.com - The most treeskiing can be found on the Gad side of the mountain. From the Gad 2 Lift, turn left off of Election and head into the Black Forest, or from Bananas, turn right into the woods, cross Gadzooks and keep going. Steeper and tighter stuff can be found in the Thunder Bowl area. Watch out for cliff bands!

skisolitude.com - Headwall Forest is a great area. Steeper and tighter trees exist between Middle Slope and Cirque. The largest area is in Honeycomb Canyon. If the Eagle Express isn't running, all of the Canyon is closed because it's the only way out.
