-If You Knew What I Knew, BSB

Chapter 1

It was a cold November evening and the roads on the bus trip had already been icy. As my closest and I friend stepped off the crowded bus and collected our luggage, I yawned and motioned towards an electronic sign that illuminated what time our bus to Cleveland would be departing Port Authority in New York City.  We stepped into the late night terminal that remained as bustling as a normal day in our origin of city of Boston.

“I love New York.”  Nikki snickered as we walked in.

I chuckled.  We were both in good spirits despite our weariness from the four hour bus ride.  This was going to be a good weekend...it seemed like we had been waiting for it forever.

“OK,” I said, “The bus to Cleveland departs in a half an hour at gate 65. That means they’ll be loading soon, so we should get in line.”

“You go get in line with the luggage,” replied Nikki, “I wanna go grab a coke.”

“Ahite,” I responded, a bit leary of being alone in the bus station, but also feeling the twinges of thirst from the dry heat of the bus.  “Can you grab me one, too?  And something to nibble on.”

“You’ll have something to nibble on tomorrow!”  Nikki joked.  I giggled.  There was nothing I wanted to nibble on more.  Nikki headed towards the kiosk and I wandered to the gate.

Nikki entered the small kiosk she had become all too familiar with.  This wasn’t her first time in New York.  She smiled when she remembered the first time, just a little over a year ago, when she and her best friend had decided to try to see their favorite group, the Backstreet Boys on the Rosie O’Donnell show.  It had been one of the best few days of their lives.

Nikki reached into the cooler and grabbed two one liter cokes.  She saw some doritoes and pawed at them trying to decide whether or not that was the right snack.  Her mind wandered.  What was going to happen?  They had been questioning this for weeks. The last trip to New York had been eventful.  They had seen all the guys.  Damn she thought the last two months have been eventful.  The girls had gotten unprecedented seats at the sold out tour in Boston.  Had seen the guys numerous times.  But something was missing.  It was like a drug.  Nikki looked down.  She had just picked up the new Cosmo. Some pleasurable reading material to check out on the bus.  She was tired of the psych articles she had been reading the past four hours.  She proceeded to pay the cashier and head out the door toward the gate.  What was going to happen?  The question ringed again and she once more departed into her own thoughts.

*****

At the gate I was remembering the first trip to New York to see the Backstreet Boys as well.  But I was remembering a moment that I dwelled on endlessly.  It was the moment I first looked into his eyes.  It was the moment I saw everything I ever wanted. He just stood there looking at me for a while.  And then he grabbed me.  I believe that in that moment his heart understood mine.  And as we embraced I could think of nothing to say that would be appropriate for what I was feeling.  I blurted out the first thing that came to my lips, “How are you feeling?”.  He had been sick.  He just smiled at me...his whole physique smiled.  “Much better thank you”.  I was fixating now...noticing strange things.  Things like that his glasses were the same as mine, and that he had on a lot of make up.  He was enormous...and I looked down and realized that my hand was enveloped in his large soft palm.  I just smiled...and he smiled back.  It seemed like forever although only seconds.  And then I pulled away.  I pulled away because I was scared at what I was feeling.  I was feeling forever.  He lingered on for a moment, and then Nikki came up to hug him.  I watched and then walked away with a pit in my stomach. I just stepped away from everything I had ever wanted.

“Where are ya Kel?” I heard my best friend’s voice.  I looked up from the bookthat I had been staring blankly into.

   “Just thinking of Rosie.”

Nikki just smiled.  “Don’t worry...” she looked at me and understood as only she could.  “We’ll see him.”  At that moment the bus driver called for tickets.  We stood upand prepared for the next segment of our journey.
