![]() 101.8 No that is not the band number of my favorite radio station, that is my temperature as of 11pm! Yep, I’m really sick this time. This was a weird one because it had no build-up, no preliminary symptoms, just chills and cough and feeling terrible. You know I must have been feeling really lousy if I took myself to the doctor immediately. But that is exactly what I did. I went to Dr. Feelgood first thing this morning, sat in the waiting room for an hour and a half, but got some strong drugs. That’s one thing I like about him. If he’s got samples he gives them to you and doesn’t make you go out and pay for a prescription. I do have to get a prescription for cough medicine filled, but he can’t give that for free because it has codeine in it. The thing is, not a single thing has kicked in yet, and I feel like garbage. I sit on the couch and stare at the tube, clicking from channel to channel. I’m enjoying the Harry Potter books a lot, but because my head hurts so much that I can’t keep my eyes focused. No point in trying to read anything at all.
![]() Of course television is really irritating today because of the Elian thing. They are turning it into a tabloid sensationalist story and it’s bugging me. Perhaps I’m simplistic in this but I just see it as a child being reunited with his dad. As a special education teacher I firmly believe that unless a child is being seriously abused he belongs with his parent. Now I might not agree with the politics of Cuba, or with the way he was taken from the other relatives, but I think giving him to his dad was the right thing to do. It was pretty clear that the Miami relatives didn’t want to give him back and they were making it difficult. Should force have been used? Probably not. Is he where he belongs now? Yes. The pictures they released of him in his dad’s arms say a lot. He’s happy there. Let them be now.

Trivia: Why does Australia have such unusual life forms? The continent of Australia has one of the most unusual collections of native life forms on the planet. Why are there so many strange forms there? 50 million years ago, Australia was part of a landmass near the South Pole. It was connected with what are now Antarctica and South America. As the continents slowly shifted, Australia split off and began a long journey northward. During that time it was isolated by wide stretches of ocean. In Australia, evolution continued for about twenty million years without interference from new forms emerging on other continents. The climate changed radically several times, and whole families of life forms became extinct while new ones evolved. As a result, Australia developed ecosystems quite different from those on other continents. Cool word: gibe [vb., n., JIBE] To make an insulting remark intended to hurt someone is to gibe. Near synonyms include mock, deride, scorn, scoff, taunt and tease. Example: "Alice wanted to get back at Judy so she gibed her about being awkward." Although it's unlikely that everyone was playing nice before the mid- 16th century, English speakers didn't call it gibing until then. It's unclear how the word entered our vocabulary although it is perhaps derived from the Middle French giber (to shake, handle roughly). This noun version of the word describes the rude comment itself. Near synonyms include quip, crack, dig, slam or barb.
