Wishing Upon A Star

August 7 Last Minute Plans

It was a glorious day. It was so gorgeously cool out that I needed a sweatshirt when I left this morning. My kind of day. Warm enough to wear shorts but cool enough for a sweatshirt.

I started out the morning by reading an e-mail telling me there was a stamp sale/show happening in Chelmsford. That was totally not on my agenda today, but I just couldn’t resist.

First there was a haircut (thank goodness!) but it was a risk. My hairdresser left on maternity leave last month (the second one this year!) and it’s always a nerve racking experience breaking in a new hairdresser. I don’t even get really freaked by a bad cut, because my hair grows really quickly, but there are a few days of hating it that I’d rather not deal with. Fortunately the girl who left wrote DETAILED instructions on how to cut my hair, so I think this new girls might just work out as an interim stylist. I have very, very thick hair that needs to be seriously thinned each time I get a cut, or it just sort of hangs in my face like a bowl. I have enough fashion challenges, so I don’t need to add Sir Lancelot-look-alike to the mix. Now I need to do something about the very gray roots.

I remain in denial about my age. Do not even mention it to me. In my head I’m no older than thirty-two. I don’t care what the calendar or my driver’s license says!

Then it was off to Chelmsford, which is about a forty-five minute drive. The most amazing thing happened. I hopped on the Mass Pike to pick up Rte 495, which is only one exit, so the toll is only a quarter. The traffic was unreal, and when I reached the exit, the line of traffic was backed up on to the highway. So the line sort of crept along for about five minutes, then started zipping along. They were waving everyone through the tollbooths. No stopping to pay…just move it! It was something I never thought I’d see!

The traffic remained really heavy all the way, so you just had to pick a lane and stay in it, hoping the traffic would keep going at least the speed limit. A truck up ahead blew a tire, so it got a bit dicey, as you had to dodge flying rubber for quite a ways. That’s the fourth time that’s happened when I’ve been driving on a highway. Scares me every time.

I found the hotel where the show was being held without any problem and then stayed for about four hours. There were some new things to buy, but what really held me there were the demonstrations. There was a very talented woman showing all sorts of different techniques. She also let me take the sample so when I get home I can actually see what she did to help me do it myself. I am such a visual learner. Of course I spent too much money again. But I work hard for it, so I might as well get what I enjoy. I don’t smoke or do drugs and rarely drink, so I figure this is a different kind of addiction.

It was also fun to see some people from my rubber stampers e-mail lists. These people are so much fun, and we all understand the obsession and love to share techniques and chat.

I had a good day. The traffic was still heavy on the way back, and seeing I hate highway driving anyways, I got off and drove back roads to get home. More scenic. Less stressful.

Tonight I think I’ll watch the Bernadette Peter’s special that is on PBS and play with my new stuff. I should try to repeat the techniques I learned today before I forget how to do them.

I actually made an effort, albeit small, to straighten up around here. I can actually see the cushions on the couch. Normally all manner of stuff is thrown and piled there. Now I need to try to unearth the coffee table.

But I have a long way to go!!
