Trivia: Who built the first self-propelled car?

In 1769, the French military engineer Nicholas Cugnot built the first self-propelled car, a gigantic steam-driven device to pull field artillery. The three-wheeled vehicle could go a whopping four kilometers an hour (about 2.5 mph) while carrying a cannon and four people. In 1784, William Murdoch built a lighter, faster car using a Watt steam condenser engine, but the engine was large and it was not very powerful. In 1802, Trevithick and Evans built a car using a high-pressure steam engine, but it was also not a success. It was not until 1804, when Trevithick put one of his steam engines into a railroad car, that steam transportation became practical. Steam engines then quickly replaced the horses that were used to pull railway carriages.

Cool word: libertine (LIB-ur-teen) - One who lives life unconcerned and unrestrained by popular convention or morality; a promiscuous person, especially a man.

The cat got sick at four am. Much like a human who has the flu. So I had to get up and clean up after him. He never throws up in the cat box, just on the carpet and comforter. I don’t think there’s a way to train him to use the box for such times as that.

So I cleaned up after him and went back to sleep for an hour or so. Then I got sick. I have no idea what it was. I might be something I picked up at school, or something I ate.

Myabe the ghost did enter me last night and is now trying to get out.

No matter what it is, I felt like crap. And still do.

Unfortunately being sick did not mean staying home. I had three meetings at work that couldn’t be missed. I knew I’d be up the creek, so I dragged myself in.

I was miserable all day. Running to the bathroom at unexpected times. It was not my kind of day.

I managed to get through the meetings, and even get some testing and teaching done. Barely.

I called to chorus director and told her that I wouldn’t be at tonight’s performance. I felt bad about that, but knew I’d never be able to do it. She wants to talk to me about emceeing. We’ll get to that someday I’m sure. I just don’t even want to think about it now.

I’m also worried about the cat. He’s been having these off and on stomach problems for too long now, so I’m going to have to get him to the vet. I hate to do that, as it always costs a bundle and the poor guy gets so scared when we have to go anywhere.

Remember this is the cat that is afraid of all people who aren’t me.

So this means that I will absolutely be taking tomorrow off. He comes first. I can use the time to recover myself.

I’ve been taking my temp since I got home. I tend to run high, so tonight it’s almost two degrees below normal.. What’s with that????

I feel really queasy still, but I’ve stopped being physically ill. I’ve successfully managed a bagel and some coke. Yum.

Michael is apparently now conducting a Krispy Kreme search. He’s e-mailing me the locations that they are now available in the city. Apparently Starbucks has recognized a good thing and has started to carry them.

So now I can get that awful caffeine buzz that Starbucks gives me (even the decaf!) and have the Krispy Kreme sugar high at the same time.

Michael is quite proud that he’s found all these locations. That’s kind of cute actually.

Off to bed. I feel crummy.
