Trivia:Are people normally radioactive?

Humans are constantly bathed in a sea of nuclear radiation, from many sources. Such radiation is measured in units called millirems (mrem), and typically each human receives about 300-400 mrem per year. A measurable part of that (30-40 mrem/year) comes from within our own bodies. An essential nutrient called potassium always contains a fraction of radioactive atoms, and these are constantly decaying in our bodies and releasing nuclear particles. As a result, people are among the most radioactive objects in our environment. The largest source of natural radiation is radon, a radioactive gas released when elements in rocks decay. Radon may accumulate near the ground, and people whose houses have basements may receive a higher radiation dose as a result. Other natural sources of radiation include radioactive rocks and cosmic rays.

Cool word:yob (yob) - A hooligan or ruffian."Always fearful of being accosted by yobs, Mary rarely used public transportation and always parked in well-lit areas."

Today was a shopping with mom kind of day. I went to the house to pick her up at about two o’clock and she had a list of places that she needed to go to.

One of them was a jeweler's. I had asked for a new boom box for Christmas, as the radio on mine has died and I do tend to use it for summer school. I’m getting diamonds and sapphires.

Go figure.

It’s pretty unexpected. I’m getting a ring that has three sapphires and four diamonds in it. The stones are coming from an antique pin that had been left to my mother by her aunt. It had ten sapphires and fourteen diamonds in it. Two of the sapphires were used by my brother in a ring for my sister-in-law.

My ring is going to be quite beautiful. I don’t have any really nice jewelry. I always wear my college ring, my Claddagh ring and my Russian wedding band (on my pinky). I have about thirty two turquoise rings (from my days on the Navajo reservation), an opal, a pearl that my parents brought back from the Orient, and some other crazy rings that are carnelian or lapis.

So this will be the first really valuable ring that I’ll own. Probably my only shot at diamonds too!

I probably sound awfully blasé about this, but I really am stunned. I never expected this.

After the jeweler’s we went to a bunch of other small shops that sell things like housewares, candy, and gift items. Then we went to a clothing store to get stuff for my brother.

It ended up taking about three hours, mainly because my mother is moving so slowly these days.

But it was a good afternoon.

My father actually got out of bed today but seems shaky. Hard to tell what’s really happening with him.

Tonight five of us (from the chorus) went out to an Indian restaurant. This included the director. It was sort of weird. I used to count her among my friends, but lately I don’t feel that way. I am afraid to start talking about the chorus when I’m around her for fear I’ll let loose and tell her everything I’m feeling and thinking.

I know I need to do this eventually, but I don’t want it to be when other people are around. I need to do it privately. Chances are good that I’ll end up crying.

The dinner itself was delicious and had far more food than I imagined. It went from soup to dessert and was delicious. It ordered everything mild, as I wanted to taste the food, not have my lips seared. I am particularly fond of hot coconut soup.

I guess it was an enjoyable evening. It just felt strained at times. It’s hard when conversation doesn’t flow naturally.

Joy of joys I get to do this again Thursday night, as four of us plus another three people from the chorus are going to see a musical and then out to dinner.

Not necessarily in that order.
