WISHING UPON A STAR New Month, short entry So it’s a new month, and a new design. I’m shifting some things around on the page because someone wrote to tell me that they thought the trivia stuff should go at the bottom of the entry. So I’ll try it for a while. If I don’t like it I’ll just change it back. Getting the new design up was a pain. I couldn’t get it to work for ages, but finally got it to work out tonight while I was waiting for my adults to show up for class. I love the bright colors. It reminds me of stamping.
![]() Speaking of the adults, one of the men came in tonight looking as if he’d been in one hell of a fight. His eyes and face were all bruised, around his ears and his cheek bones, everywhere. This man must be in his mid to late sixties. He hadn’t been in an accident. He’d had a face lift! I give him lots of credit, he said it was incredibly painful. It looked it, too. He’d just had the work done on Friday and wasn’t even supposed to be out. I think he sort of wanted to show off. I think I would too. I would love to have my eyes done some day. I’d never have the cash, but it’s a nice fantasy. Of course I’d need a full body job, lyposuction, tummy tuck etc. If you’re going to do it you might as well have a whole new look when you’re done. It’s unfortunate that he won’t be healed when class ends next week, I’d like to see what he looks like when he’s fully healed.
![]() I’ve had a wicked headache all day. I guess there’s something new going around our building, as kids have been going home with terrible headaches and other teachers have been mentioning they have them as well. It was all I could do to crawl out of bed today. I desperately wanted to stay home and hibernate. Of course that was totally unrealistic. I had way too much work to do today and I also had to teach that class tonight. I think it’s unethical to blow off your day job but to show up for your night job, so I knew I had to drag myself through the day. I’d really hoped to take a nap this afternoon before going back, but it wasn’t meant to be. The second I settled into the recliner and had the afghan wrapped around me the phone rang. First it was Cathy, then about three minutes after I hung up from that call my mother called. I kept that one short and started to doze and my brother called. That was a shocker, he never calls. Unless he wants something. My mother had called him today and started yelling at him for never calling me, so she guilted him into it. I like hearing from him, but it was strange. Now it’s time for bed and some drugs for this headache. ![]() Listening to: Whistle Down the Wind Reading: Once Upon A Star Nora Roberts Weather: 38, sunny Trivia: What kind of robot swims like a fish? Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have built a robot tuna fish, and now they are working on a robot pike. They hope to answer some important questions about how fish swim. Fish can swim very efficiently, in fact more efficiently than the laws of physics would seem to allow. If we could understand how they do this, it might be possible to design boats, submarines, and other machines that swim much more efficiently using fins instead of propellers. Meanwhile researchers in Japan have built a robot sea-bream, another kind of fish. They plan to create a museum exhibit containing robot models of extinct sea creatures, all swimming as if they are alive. Cool word: it's a dog's life If you say "it's a dog's life," what you mean might depend on how old you are. In modern western civilization most dogs have it pretty good. They get plenty to eat,a warm place to sleep, and lots of love. So a young person who uses this phrase usually means that life is good. But in the past dogs were work animals and they often worked very hard. They were expected to earn their keep doing service as herders, guards, and many other functions. Most dogs did not have an easy life and older people who use this phrase usually mean that life is difficult, a sense that has survived since the phrase's origins in the sixteenth century. Other expressions that reflect this view include "it's a dog eat dog world," "dog tired," and "die like a dog."
