Trivia: Who was first to recognize Saturn's rings?

Although Galileo Galilei was the first to see the rings of Saturn, his telescope did not provide a very good view and he did not correctly interpret them. He thought he was seeing two smaller planets just touching the central planet. When the rings became edge-on to Earth, Galileo was confused by the sudden disappearance of the two "side planets." For many years, Saturn was a mystery. The strange side protruberances came to be called ansae (handles), but no one could explain what they were, or why they sometimes disappeared. The first correct interpretation of Saturn's rings was by the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens [KRIS-chan HOW-kenz] in 1656. For some time, Huygens kept his discovery a secret, while he finished other projects. Finally, in 1658 he revealed the secret, then explained it more fully in his 1659 book, "Systema Saturnium."

Cool word: pundit [n. PUN-dit]

A pundit is someone who is highly learned, a scholar, critic, or authority. The learned statements of a pundit may be called punditry [n. PUN-dit-ree]. Example: "With the election too close to call and the mud-slinging at a fever pitch, the pundits are having a field day trying to predict the outcome." The ancient Sanskrit adjective panditah (highly respected; learned) may have come from an even more ancient Dravidian origin. In Hindi, someone of great knowledge and wisdom was addressed with the title of Pandit. In the 1600s, the word crossed over into English as a noun, referring to a scholar or sage. Today, the word's meaning has shifted slightly, so that a pundit may be someone whose wisdom and knowledge is somewhat in doubt. To be called a pundit today sometimes involves a small amount of sarcasm about one's alleged authority.

I called in again this morning. I woke up feeling so awful. I couldn’t stop coughing and felt as if I’d been run over by a truck. The headache that is brought on by the antibiotic is really awful. This is not a good thing for someone who is prone to migraines to begin with.

I can’t believe I’ve been out so many days. I’ll never manage to get back into the groove again.

I did finish writing a report so I could e-mail it to The Pink of Perfection. I’m sure she needs it to get it to the parents in the morning. But did she e-mail that she’d received it or send me a thank-you? Of course not.

I should have left her swinging in the breeze.

By about four o’clock this afternoon I started to feel better, as long as I wasn’t coughing. If I start coughing though,it’s endless. I’m glad I live alone so others don’t have to listen to me. Even the cat doesn’t like being around me when the coughing starts.

So I started playing with some of my stamps and accessories that I’ve never managed to try. I often buy this stuff and then it sits for ages and ages. Today I tried using my Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel. It’s this embossing stuff that you use on a stiff piece of cardboard. It requires using several layers and getting them very hot, them impressing the stamp – either inked or uninked- into the hot enamel. I like one of them a lot. The other was a mistake that I tried to fix and ended up looking very funky. But I can’t say I dislike it. It’s interesting stuff to work with.

I also tried using embossable acetate and coloring the back with special paint pens that will dry on this plastic. These things I like a lot. They’re very bright and make interesting bookmarks once I layer them on cardstock.

I still have to finish Cathy’s birthday card. We’re taking her out on Sunday, so this needs to be done. I’m not sure I’ll get out to get her a present though. Maybe by Saturday I’ll have rallied enough.

I’ve already called in for tomorrow. I was on the phone with Dee and started one of my coughing spells and she convinced me that it would be stupid to go in and pick up something else from one of the kids. She’s right. Plus it’s supposed to be freezing cold and I have recess duty.

So I’ve had four days out of work this week. Unbelievable….

Apparently the choreography meeting went well last night, and the director was a totally different person. Dee had stunned her with a question on Tuesday night and it may have jarred her just a bit.

Whatever it takes….It will be nice to have things a bit more peaceful and on an even keel. Not that I think it will really happen.

The cat is still not totally ok. I hadn’t noticed until late last night that they must have shaved the hair under his chin in order to take blood. I flipped out. Talk about feeling like a guilty mother. All I can think of is how scared he must have been, how it must have hurt and that he thought I’d abandoned him.

Talk about a guilty mother. He seems to have recovered from his ordeal. I’m not sure I ever will….
