Trivia:Why do gnats fly around in large groups?

We've all seen them - groups of gnats gathered together in large groups in midair, swarming around an imaginary fixed point. Even waving your hand through the group to confuse their sense of locus, they return and regroup around the same point. Well, in this case, the swarming is part of a mating ritual common to many insect species, wherein the males hover together, hanging out as it were, and await the females. The insects orient themselves over or near some easily recognizable topographical feature and not an imaginary fixed point. Their incredible persistence in maintaining the swarm is easily attributable to the overwhelming urge for any organism to perpetuate itself and the fact that the tiny fruit fly known as Trypetidae (of which most of what we call gnats are from the family of) live for a very short time, typically only a few weeks. So, before you casually wave your hand through the next gnat swarm you see, keep in mind that you may be interrupting some of the only fun the little guys will ever see.

This day was a day of icebergs.

It is absolutely bitterly cold outside today, and it’s not much better in here. This apartment has no insulation to speak of, and all the outside walls are cold to the touch. I even have ice forming on the metal window frames INSIDE.

I’ve got the heat cranked up, and am pretending that I won’t be upset when the electric bill arrives (ha! I’ll be upset!) I just can’t get warm.

At about two thirty this afternoon I was falling asleep on the couch while I was watching "you’ve Got Mail" (yes again. I know I’m able to recite the dialogue… and is there something wrong with that?). I decided to go back to bed, turned on the electric blanket and slept until five!

That is so weird. I really am not the napping on a Sunday type. I have no idea what came over me, I just knew that I couldn’t stay awake. So I slept.



I had a meeting to attend tonight, so I had to get up and get dressed and put on my face. This was the choreography meeting for the chorus. The first time I would sit in the same room as the director since my resignation as an emcee and my decision to take a leave of absence became official.

This is where the other part of the iceberg comes in. I was the iceberg. She has made no effort to call me, to hear me out, or to show any concern about me, therefore I didn’t feel as if I needed to speak to her or give her any information.

It was interesting, because when I arrived at the home of the hostess she was so gracious and enthused to see me. "I miss you, I’m so glad to see you!" and this was echoed by the other members of the committee who were in attendance. Not the director.

Now, generally speaking it’s my nature to try to smooth things over and to try to make everyone feel comfortable. Not tonight. I have felt slighted and hurt by this woman and I have no desire to make things easier for her. She needs to do something to mend fences, and it just isn’t’ happening.

So tonight I was about as warm to her as the iceberg that sank the Titanic. And I feel no remorse about it either.

We revamped the choreography for our up tune and I think it’s added some pizzazz to the song. We’ll see how it goes over.



My mother and I didn’t go to Northampton this morning as it was snowing. I know it’s wimpy, but I just refuse to drive any distance in the snow. It ended up clearing by the afternoon, but I didn’t want to chance it.
