Trivia:What alphabet letter has changed the least?

Of the 26 letters in the modern Roman alphabet, the only one that remains unchanged since its invention is the letter "O," which has remained the same since it was used in the Phoenician alphabet about 3,300 years ago. No one knows when or where the first true alphabet was invented. It was a revolutionary concept, to use symbols for the sounds that made up words, instead of using a symbol for each word. Like the letter "O," many of the letters of the earliest alphabets corresponded in some way to the shape of the mouth when the letters were pronounced. The Phoenician system of sound-symbols was the first widely successful alphabet, replacing the cumbersome, complex cuneiform writing system. It spread throughout the ancient world, giving rise to the Greek alphabet, the Russian cyrillic system, and our Roman alphabet.

Cool word:mufti [n. MUF-tee]

Most commonly in British English, mufti is a collective noun for ordinary, civilian clothing worn by someone like a policeman or soldier who wears a uniform when on duty. But a mufti can also be a Moslem scholar who is legally empowered to interpret the religious law (sharia) and issue rulings (fatwa). How do these two meanings relate to each other? Originally, only the Moslem scholars were called muftis. When soldiers in the British army stationed in the middle east would go off duty, they jokingly related their casual civilian clothing, which in those days often consisted of a dressing gown, slippers, and smoking cap, to the similar Oriental robes of the muftis. The Arabic word mufti is from the same root as fatwa. In Arabic, word roots are based on the consonants only, in this case f-t-w.

I have spent HOURS trying to lad entries from Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I discovered that I could do one, but then couldn’t adjust any of the other features within the site. I had to sign out and wait a while.

Like a couple hours.

Then I could go back and fix the little things like the index page. I don’t know what the heck is going on, but I’ve found it to be damn frustrating. This is at least an improvement from the last few days when I couldn’t access at all.

If I mange to get this uploaded before I go to bed I’ll be stunned.

I plan to go to bed fairly early, so there is a small window of opportunity for all of this to happen.

I’m tired right now. I’ve gotten quite a bit done today.

I managed to make a card and a tile for my secret stamper friend and got the package to the post office. I like all the things in the package. I hope she does too. I like the card I made her a lot, too.

I also managed to write an educational plan (the paperwork that gives kids special education services). These take quite a bit of time, and are a pain in the neck to do. This was the one that was the result of the meeting I had last Wednesday where the father told us he was prepared to "sue our asses off" if we didn’t give them what they wanted.

Just one of the reasons I love my job.

I also wrote a testing report. I’m proud of this one. I think I did a really good job I spent a lot of time and put a lot of thought into what I wanted to say. It took a long time to get it done, but at least I know that what I’ve written gives a good picture of the child.

I didn’t get to planning the dragons/Chinese New Year unit, but I think I can start it in the next few days without too much planning.

I would have liked to spend more time playing with my new stamping toys today, but I had to be a responsible adult and get my work done.

I’ll find time to play another time.

I should spend some time trying to find the remote for the television. It’s been missing for days and is very irritating. It must be on the bottom of some pile, and if it’s under the pile of stamps and paper it may be days before it’s unearthed.

I do want to go to bed by nine thirty, even though I want to watch the Golden Globe Awards. The thing is that I think I need the extra sleep, and I shouldn’t fight it. I should probably just set the VCR and not even think about it.

I’m still really cold today. I have the heat on in my apartment, but I find that even with a sweater and a turtleneck on, I’m freezing. I keep putting on my fleece bathrobe over my clothes to stay warm.

They thought we were going to get a storm today or tonight, but it seems to have veered away. Now they’re saying Wednesday into Thursday could be a killer storm. I don’t think they have any idea what they’re talking about, they just want to keep us all in a state of high alert and high anxiety.

I just don’t want a snow day.

But if I did have a snow day I could spend it playing with stamps….
