![]() A World of Morons ![]() Listening to: Phantom of the Opera Cast Recording Reading: Once Upon A Star Nora Roberts Weather: 36, snowy-N’or Easter Trivia: Where do secret agents come from? In spite of what you may have seen on television or the movies, not all secret agents are recruited from the ranks of the about to be executed or those enhanced with bionic limbs after a horrible accident. Most come from three main sources: colleges, where students are sought and trained for intelligence careers; the military and police forces, where some degree of intelligence proficiency can already have been attained; and the underground world of espionage, which produces a myriad of persons, including criminal informers, with relevant experience. Why people want to spy, a job which sometimes involves stealing information or performing disloyal acts of disclosure, is nearly as varied. For many, simple greed is the leading incentive - spying can pay very well. Other motivations, such as ambition, political ideology, or nationalistic idealism, can also figure importantly. Sometimes spies must be carefully recruited and enticed into cooperation; but other times they volunteer. These "walk-ins" are usually handled with extreme care, as it's pretty common for them to be double agents, or spies who pretend to be defecting, but in reality maintain their original loyalty. Their use is typically restricted for positive espionage purposes. The most valuable spy of all is the "mole" - a person who remains in a position of trust with access to highly secret information, but who has been recruited by the opposition. A good mole can remain in place for years, funneling critical information on important matters of state. Real secret agents aren't like James Bond and don't live lives of glamour and intrigue but, for the right people, it's a highly satisfying career. Cool word: Tuesday [n. TOOZ-day] Tuesday is traditionally the third day of the seven day week. For any people, Tuesday is the most productive day of the week, when we are till relatively fresh and energetic yet fully involved in the week's activities. Fittingly for such an active, productive day, the Romans called it Dies Martis (day of Mars, the war god), translating from the Greek hemera Areos (day of Ares). The Germanic cultures borrowed the custom of naming days after gods but used Tiu, their own god of war and the sky, naming the day Tiwesdaeg (Tiu's day). Tiu was derived from the same root as Latin deus (god), which also gave us English deity. Swedish Tisdag and Danish Tirsdag also reflect this origin. In Russian, this day is called vtornik, which simply means "second day." ![]() Today was a day filled with morons. The alarm goes off at 5:30. I think, "shit, it didn't snow, we have school" so I start the morning routine. I have on the early morning news and I'm watching the school cancellations scroll by.... every surrounding town...but has the town I work in canceled? God forbid. Now granted, at five thirty this morning the storm had just begun, but the predictions of what to expect were dire. It was a true N’or Easter and they were expecting accumulation of 6-12 inches of snow. Think ahead folks, it might not be tough getting to school, but it’s not going to be any picnic trying to get home. No one in my system thought of that apparently. We put in a full day, as the snow continued to fall........ and fall........ and fall........... and fall. They finally decided to cancel school early........it was so exciting! We normally get out at 2:35, and today they let us out at....................... it's coming............ it's unbelievable........... 2:25!!!!
![]() Can you believe it? The people who run school departments are MORONS!!!! I'll bet you didn't know how they determine whether or not there'll be an early release. It all hinges on whether or not they've started to cook lunch. Once they start cooking we have to stay the entire day! Isn't that unbelievable?!?
![]() Dee had the day off, as her system had had the intelligence and foresight to cancel. I called her during lunch from the teacher’s room and we all gave her a rousing chorus of "boos". It was pretty funny. I keep trying to keep in mind that I’ll be happy we didn’t have today off when we really do get out of school on June 15. Damn that seems awfully far away!
![]() Getting out of the parking lot was a challenge. They had totally plowed in all the teachers, so we were out there digging like mad. Fortunately a parent came by and he had a plow on the front of his truck and moved a lot of the snow for us. We still had to dig a bit in order to get out, and suddenly the guy in the machine that clears the sidewalks arrived and finished digging us out. I thought that was really thoughtful. We only got about six inches, but it's the driving that I dread. And why do I dread the drive? Because of the morons who drive SUVs with four wheel drive! They consider themselves to be invincible and anyone who is ahead of them on the road better be going at least ten miles over the speed limit. If you choose not to drive in a fashion that they deem to be acceptable they will drive up the rear of your car and stay there. The fact that this is dangerous is of no consequence. They are important, they have four wheel drive, they have places to go, and you are hindering their progress. Of course this just gets my back up and I go even slower. I can get really mean that way.
![]() I managed to get home in one piece and was more that a tad relieved when I finally got off the back roads and on to a major route. Main roads were fairly well treated. I am happy to be in for the evening and I hope that this doesn’t turn to ice. That could make tomorrow really miserable.
