Wishing Upon A Star

March 10
Birthday Party

Today was Matilda’s party. Oh to be eight again!

She really held it together very well for the forty five minutes it took for her father to get there. The rule is that you can’t open any presents until all family members are gathered, and her father was late arriving. The poor kid was practically salivating by the time he got there.

She was very thankful and polite – and delighted- with each present that she opened. She was careful to make sure that she kept all the cards as well. It was Keith’s job to read the card then she could open the gift.

The dolls and accessories were a huge hit, she was just thrilled to pieces with them. In some ways she is so like me. I just loved dolls (I still do) and I played with them until I was far too old to be doing so. I still have many of the dolls that I loved the most. Even now I’m still a sucker for stuffed animals and dolls.

Matilda’s birthday dinner was pizza. I’m not a big pizza fan, and in that I’ve been feeling lousy for two days I decided to pass and have a bagel instead. (What kind of a party pooper am I? But in that I’d left work at eleven this morning because I was having such horrible stomach attacks I felt that I shouldn’t risk it.) I did have some of the Cinderella birthday cake. It was very cute with little orange pumpkins made out of frosting and a cute carriage and Cinderella figurine to top it off.

Matilda sang "Happy Birthday" right along with us. I love the happiness and excitement of children on their birthday.

I left at about 7:30, meaning that I was going to be about an hour late for rehearsal. It didn’t seem to matter much. I think I only missed physical and vocal warm-ups, both of which I hate. I know they’re necessary, but that doesn’t make me hate them any less.

We rehearsed until about ten, and then we all dragged off to our rooms. We didn’t even hang around to chat, we were all looking might wiped out. I think I was asleep by eleven. Of course the fact that I felt rotten had something to do with that.

That and the knowledge that Saturday would be grueling.

Trivia: Who holds the patent on the popsicle?

Originally marketed as the "Epsicle" the frozen treat was created by accident by 11-year-old Frank Epperson. It seems that in 1905 he left a glass of lemonade with a spoon in it on a windowsill one cold winter's night. Awakening to the frozen concoction he found it both fascinating and tasty but, being just a kid, failed to realize its commercial potential. By 1924 he had patented it, however, and the rest is confectionery history.

Cool word: bijou [n., adj. BEE-jhoo]

Bijou is a jewel of a noun that refers to a small and delicately crafted ornament, usually a piece of jewelry. The plural is bijous or bijoux. A bijouterie is a collection of these trinkets and ornaments. The dainty adjective describes something delicate, elegant, or highly prized. It is something that is small but still attractive and fashionable. Example: "The street was lined with bijou cafes, bars and buildings." In use in the English language since the late 17th century, bijou is taken from the Breton bizou (ring) which was derived from the Breton biz (finger).

ARIES

Resist the urge to go in for some secret little indulgences that could all too easily get out of hand. There are sides to yourself you do not wish others to know about, and this is all well and good. But when you keep what you are really like from yourself too then complications set in. You will learn a lot from seeing what you are attracted to, and the kind of people you yourself attract.
