Wishing Upon A Star

March 14
Hanging in

I decided last night that I would call in sick for today. I was feeling lousy and thought that I’d call in so I could sleep late today.

Ha.

I was up at 7. Which is an hour and a half longer than I normally get, but I thought that I’d sleep till at least 8, if not 9.

Such disappointment.

I thought I was doing great, too. I felt swell when I woke up, almost guilty about having taken the day off (notice I said ALMOST!). I sort of sailed around, enjoyed watching Katie, Matt and Al on the Today show, then watching Carol Duvall on HGTV.

At 10:30 the new attack came. I was sick as a dog and trapped in the bathroom for an hour. From that point on I felt drained and almost weak.

I have no idea what brought on the attack, after all Saltines, chicken soup, gingerale and tea aren’t exactly exotic.

So the rest of the afternoon was spent on the couch, although I did try to do some stamping. I didn’t get much done, as concentrating made my head hurt.

I wanted to use my expensive paints and do some playing around with colors and blending, but I just couldn’t concentrate on getting things right.

So that will have to be saved for another day.

I did go to rehearsal tonight. I had to drop off some stuff that a friend wanted to borrow, and stayed to see if the director would follow through on what the coach had done with us over the weekend.

Surprisingly enough she did.

That was encouraging.

But now I’m wiped out and I absolutely have to go to work in the morning. I have a difficult meeting that I’m dreading and I have a feeling that it’s not going to go well.

off to bed.

Trivia:What's the closest spacecraft fly-by so far?

On July 28, 1999 the spacecraft Deep Space 1 (DS1) passed within ten kilometers (six miles) of a tiny Asteroid called 9969 Braille, in the closest non-impact fly-by to date of a spacecraft past any celestial object. Moving at a relative speed of 15.5 kilometers per second (nearly 35,000 miles/hour), DS1 zoomed past Braille more than 50 times faster than the speed of a commercial jet, and twice as fast as the Space Shuttle. Deep Space 1 is part of NASA's New Millennium Program, a group of missions designed to test and refine new space technologies. DS1 tests twelve new inventions, including a revolutionary ion propulsion system and a sophisticated software navigation system.

Cool word: edentulous [adj. ee-DEN-chu-lus]

If you have no teeth you are edentulous. Example: "The edentulous dog at the Harvey household posed no threat to the postman." The word may not have much bite, but it has been in our vocabulary since the late 1700s. It comes from the Latin edentulus. It uses the prefix e- or ex-, which meant missing or absent and the Latin dent- (tooth).

Other words using the dent- root include:
  • dentist: the person who offers plastic toys for good brushing habits
  • dentures: an artificial set of teeth
  • dentifrice: a powder or paste for cleaning teeth
  • denturist: someone who fits and repairs dentures
