Cool word: pun [n. PUN]
A pun is a witty play on words. Sometimes it is a story or sentence including a word that has two meanings, but most often a word is substituted for one that sounds similar, giving a funny or ironic twist to a sentence. In the 17th and 18th centuries in England, it was fashionable to create short one-syllable words from longer ones. One such word was
mob, which was short for mobile. Another may have been pun, from pundigrion, a fancy name for a witty play on words. Pundigrion was probably inherited from Italian puntiglio (nice point; quibble), which also gave us punctilious [adj. pungk-TIL-ee-us] (meticulous;
precisely proper).
More recently, these new words have emerged from pun:
punster: one who writes or utters puns
punnology: the study of wordplay involving puns
punnigram: a short witty poem or statement including a pun

Bits and Pieces

I decided to come home between school and the adult ed course today. I’m not sure it was a good idea, but it did give me a bit of down time. I just sat on the couch and watched "Rosie". I was afraid to let myself actually fall asleep, I’m tired enough that there’s a chance I wouldn’t wake up.
Of course I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of driving back to school again. It’s a no win situation.

I still haven’t heard from Michael. I’m very sad. I don’t know if I should push him or not. I could bombard him with e-mail, but I’m not sure that will do me any good. It might just irritate him. I have no patience for this kind of thing.
O course, glutton for punishment that I am, I signed up for yet another trip to NYC. This one is on December 4th and only cost $39 through the local parks and recreation department. One of the teachers at school saw the notice in the paper and gave it to me today. I stopped on the way home to sign up.
Even if I don’t see Michael I’ll see another show. Of course I want to see Michael.
Am I pushing this? Am I stupid?
Probably.

The class went pretty well tonight. The Hummer drove everyone away from him. The married couple had changed the terminals that they were sitting at so they could be closer to the front, but The Hummer chose to sit next to them. I was showing the woman how to do something and she kept saying, "What’s that noise?"
It was The Hummer. He wasn’t just humming this time, he was sort of hissing. Reminded me of a kid’s pool that had a fast leak.
The couple changed their seats again. They couldn’t take the noise.
I kept waiting for The Hummer to deflate.
I showed them how to cut and paste tonight, and how to bullet items. They were astounded. I also showed them how to save to a disk. It was amazing to hear all the "oohs" and "aahs". It’s so old hat to me that I don’t even think about it.

It’s suddenly freezing here. They’re actually predicting a frost tonight. I remember the good old days when we actually had a fall. It was for a couple of months each year, when the heat and humidity of the summer departed, and crispy cool air moved in. This was before we had to deal with blankets and frosty nights. We seem to be skipping the crisp cool air part and moving straight into freezing and sweaters.
Gee, I miss the good old days!
