Cool word: gnomon [n. NO-mun]
The gnomon of a sundial is the part that sticks up and casts a shadow, showing what time it is. More generally, a gnomon is any kind of pointer that indicates a value by casting a shadow. Another kind of gnomon is the shape left behind by removing a parallelogram (diamond) from a larger parallelogram with which it shares a corner. The two meanings are related because the shape of a sundial gnomon is often like a diamond with a smaller diamond taken out. The word comes through Latin, from the Greek gignoskein (to know).
Getting organized

I’m running around in an unorganized frenzy trying to figure out what I need to take with me to New York tomorrow. It’s hard to travel light, but with all the necessary items. I can’t do without contact lens case and drops, glasses, sunglasses, wallet, money, book, car keys, journal, note pad, glue stick, scissors. Then I should probably take a map (even though I don’t really need one), my new Izone camera and film, and I know there’s something I must be forgetting. I don’t want to take an umbrella, but there’s a 30% chance of rain, so I probably should.
Such heavy decisions.
Of course it took me a couple of hours to figure out what to wear. I had already decided on my new jeans, but it was the old dilemma of what blouse? What blazer? Sweater? Raincoat? Will it be cold? Cool? Of course there are no answers, so no matter what I choose I’m likely to be wrong.
I finally decided on my tweed (or is it small checks?) blazer that is in celery tones and an off white blouse. So then I had to iron everything.
I figure I have to get up by four thirty, so I need to have everything ready to jump into so I can get off on time.

I have pretty much decided my plan of action for the day, but have allowed room for mind changing. Nothing is cast in stone.
The insecure part of me is thinking maybe Michael lied and didn’t go away, but just doesn’t want to see me.
Now there is no rational reason to believe this, as our e-mails remain frequent and very very friendly, but I have this evil though going in my head.
I’m pathetic.

We went to the symphony today, and it was quite good. My only beef is that the selections are too unfamiliar to the kids, so they get antsy. I wish they’d play things that might be vaguely familiar to them.
These kids aren’t exposed to classical music the way we were. Now it would have to be a conscious effort on the part of a parent or teacher to introduce them to the pieces. I was never formally introduced to them, but was constantly exposed to them via cartoons. They were always the soundtracks for storms at sea and mice frolicking in the snow, so when I went to the symphony I’d at least have some familiarity with the piece.
The kids get none of that now, I don’t think The Rugrats or Pokemon use classical music as part of their production.
Watching Keith Lockhart is always a treat. He is so smooth and precise in his directing. His cute butt and silk Armani suit aren’t hard to look at either. He has a great rapport with the kids in the audience and is able to talk to them without talking down to them.
The bus didn’t get lost today, which is also a plus. We tend to have bad bus experiences on many of these trips. We even got on a bus once only to have the driver turn around to us and say, "So, how do I get there?"
That usually puts us over the edge.

That’s all for now. I won’t update again until sometime on Sunday, as I don’t expect to get back here much before midnight tomorrow.
Humming "I’ll take Manhattan" as I sign off.
