Beverly Shows of Creativity at State
Finals
Two Teams Qualify for Global Finals
On March 24, 6 Beverly Teams from various schools
participated in the Destination ImagiNation State Finals
tournament at Worchester Poly Tech. Every team qualified for
this tournament at a regional tournament the previous
weekend at Salem High School. At Worchester over 300 teams
from around the state gathered to compete and display there
solutions to 'challenges' given to the students 5 months
prior to the tournament. Beverly boasted six teams, a record
number for Beverly- since the start of the program eight
years ago.
The combination team of Cove School Students Emily
Craighead, Olivia Jones, Ali Hartman and Shannon Walker
teamed up with Briscoe Middle School students . Katie
Donohue and Rachel Kalman to compete at the Middle school
level. They placed 6th, in the middle school of there
challenge, Strandid. The teams solution told the story of
weary travelers getting strandid on Mount Olympus.
The Waring School's team consisting of five students, did
very well in there challenge. There team was asked to build
two structures out of balsa wood, paper, and glue to be
tested for strength. The team also wrote a witty skit about
the contrast between a land were everything and everyone was
white to a land of color.
Hannah Elementary Schools team of first and second
graders did very well in there improvisational challenge.
The team was very close and there teamwork added to their
success.
The Beverly High School team consisting of students Emily
Lavadiere, Sara Atkinson, Jamie Milander, Caroline McAvoy
and Amy Marcucci placed third in the Improvisation
Challenge. With an improvisational story of a trip to space
camp.
Two Beverly teams placed first in their challenge and
division qualifying them to compete at the 2002 Global
Finals, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in May.
Both teams who qualified participated in the vehicle
challenge, called Its Your Move!. Students were asked to
design a vehicle that could operate with independent power
within a 20' x 20' grid. The team was also asked to create a
device capable of delivering 12 objects to a receiver,
outside the gird.
The Cove Elementary Team won the elementary division of
this challenge. Team members, Kate Reed, Stafanie Harris,
Anna Roy, Anna Reed, Lauren McGinnis, Clare Stanton and
Lindsey McLaughlin created a weight mechanism to propel
their vehicle. Their presentation included a colorful
backdrop and costumes. In addition to qualifying to compete
at the Global Finals, the team was awarded a Renaissance
award for engineering, design, and performance and a Spirit
of Discovery and Imagination award for
teamwork.
The second Beverly team qualifying to compete at the
Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee was the Beverly High
School team consisting of Bill Raymond, Andrew Walker, Kyle
Theriault , Jenn Ames , Sarah Diehl and Mike Andruskiewicz.
The team placed first and also was awarded the DaVinci Award
for outstanding creativity and risk taking, for there
solution to the vehicle challenge. The team build a fully
functional hovercraft, and performed a skit about William
Shakespeare writing and producing a play- written entirely
in Shakespearean verse by the team.
The Two teams traveling to the Global tournament at
Knoxville will, together, need to raise over $15, 000 to
cover the cost of transporting there props, materials, and
team members to Tennessee. The teams will be doing various
fundraisers such as selling 50/50 raffle tickets. If you
