The Hyrule Loach

The Hyrule Loach (or Hylian Loach as some prefer to call it) is the largest fish that can be caught in the fishing pond near Lake Hylia. For awhile I did not believe that this could be done but I recently investigated it a little further and actually ended up catching it! I have some screen shots from it via digital camera, so the quality sucks (sorry i can't directly take shots), but you get to see the Loach at any rate. I mapped out the dialogue as well so you can see what happens (it isn't much). Basically the fisherman tells you that the fish is a rare species and that there aren't many left, so he has to put it back. Because of this there is no record on the game of you ever catching it! Slightly annoying. Anyway he gives you 50 rupees and thats it. If you plan on trying to catch the Hyrule Loach (as the fisherman refers to it) you essentially only get the pride of knowing that you angled the biggest fish in the pond! Otherwise keep a camera by your side so that you have proof of your catch!

If you want some tips on how to catch it, this is the best advice I can give you:

Though not confirmed, the loach appeared for me most (well I've only seen it twice and caught it once), but both times I played the suns song (to become evening) and then played the song of storms (to make it rain), and then entered the fishing pond. It seems that after this there are more fish in the pond overall. Some others say you want to making it morning and play the suns song, but that didn't work for my experience. I don't know if this helps at all anyway, but you should know that the loach is not always in the pond, and that if you want to catch it you should look for it for a little bit (it usually lurks around the middle and slides across the ground). Just slap on the iron boots and go into first person view to look around underwater. The loach comes up for air every once and awhile, you will see and hear it do so.

Get the sinking lure! I've heard you can catch it with a normal lure, but it is supposedly much harder and takes awhile. The sinking lure can be located around the pond (in the grass), near the stream in the back (with the rocks) or on top of the log in the pond. You must be an adult and must have already caught a 20 pound fish (or larger) with the normal lure.

Hints for actually catching the gosh-darned thing:

Here's how I did it in my case. After I confirmed that the loach was in the pond, I went over and paid the 20 rupees for the fishing rod. I put on the Zora's Tunic and the Iron Boots and set out to work. When you walk into the pond with the iron boots on, you will notice a 'splash' which indicates that you are now underwater. It is good to know this because you don't want to go too far into the pond and disturb the fish, but you still want to be underwater so that you can look for the loach. Now, the loach is often motionless and will sit around for about a minute or so, and then slide across the bottom to a new location and then sit still again. It also comes up for air every once and a while and touches the surface, but thats not important right now. Anyway, once you find the loach in its motionless state, center the loach in the middle of the screen in first person camera mode, then go back to 3rd person and walk directly backwards until you are above water and able to cast. Then turn around right towards the loach and position the sinking lure right on top of it (preferable right in its face). As soon as it moves again, give the rod a few jerks to 'entice' the fish, and if you're lucky it will notice the bait and start to follow it. It will strike for it if it is interested, and you have to make sure to hook it, because the music won't fade out it will just go right into the fight music. Then just fight for it as you would any big fish! In my experience it wasn't too hard to reel the fish in.

Some Screenshots of the endevour (in a play by play fashion):
You might notice from the pictures that it is from the masterquest (gamecube) version of the game, so thats why the buttons at the top are different.
