Majora's Mask Review

As soon as I found out Majora's Mask has been released early I hurried as fast as I could to EB, where i had placed my preorder a few weeks ago. It was just a day before the ps2(playstation 2) was to be released. I was glad that it was shipped early so i could aviod the hassle of huge bratty mobs, beating the pulp out of eachother for a overpriced $300 system. I wanted to walk in quietly, and get out as fast as i could with my special Gold Cartridge of Majora's Mask. So I paid of the rest of the order and the clerk gave me what I had been waiting so long for. As I walked out of the store that day, with the beautiful shimmering box in my hand, I knew this game was destined to be a classic.

And it was, Majora's Mask has beautiful graphics that are some of the best that I've seen on the N64. Link is once again glorified in 3D in the sequel to Ocarina of Time. Majora's Mask makes excellent use of the expansion pak, creating enormous realistic 3D environments that blow your mind away. The drawing distance is also glorified. When you walk out into the field, you can see clear across to th other side with no fog to cover it up. There was no doubt in my mind that the graphics would recieve a perfect score(10).

Running on the same engine of OoT, the gameplay is the same and is superb as usual. You have excellent control over Link, as well as the forms he is allowed to transform into. All are handled well with their different abilities and styles. The expansion pak must have been used here to keep track of all the moves and different buttons you can press for 4 different beings. This category undoubtably deserves the perfect score of a 10.

The music is great as it is in most zelda games and the sound effects are good too. As pleased as I am with the music, a good deal of it is reused from OoT. However, since the music is still epic, I was forced to give it a 9. Even though most of the music and sounds are reused from OoT, they are superb and are reminiscent of the other games. As much as I enjoyed The Ocarina of Time's new overworld theme, I especially enjoyed the return of the original.

The Length and Intrigue is where I began to get a little dissapointed. As intriguing and excellent the story and such are, the length isn't too great. Four temples isn't very much. I don't want to compare, but 4 temples to OoT's 8 is a drastic drop. However, since the intrigue makes up for the short length, I gave it an 8. The only complaint I had on my will to play it was that the saving system isn't that great. Every time you save you have to warp back to the first day and most actions are undone, including temples. However, you get used to it, and Nintendo leaves many opportunities to make it easier for you when you come back from the first day.

I enjoyed this game very much, and since there are so many subplots that you can follow I added this as part of my "other" category. I liked this game alot and couldn't resist giving it a 9 to tilt the scale. I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a good solid adventure game. It is a great game, and embraces a new, darker side of the Zelda series. If you are one of those hardcore Zelda fans that is dissapointed it Majora's Mask, shut up and deal with it. Majora's Mask is a side story to the Zelda series(hence Zelda Gaiden) so your normal, epic, Zelda adventure will return for the Gamecube. To anyone who is reading this, I highly recommend Majora's Mask, as one of the last truly great games for the N64.
