The Battle for Console Supremacy

First Edition

We all know the popularity of videogames is skyrocketing, and it has come to a huge marketing war between those battling for videogame supremacy. So it all comes down to one question: What console is the best?

Just by the fact that your here, I’m going to assume many are fans of the Zelda Series, this could mean that you favor nintendo. There are others who favor Sony, or Sega, or even some insane people who have faith in Microsoft. The names of the newest next generation consoles are: Sega’s Dreamcast, Sony's Playstation 2, Nintendo's Gamecube, and Microsoft's X-box. Whatever it is, the best console will undoubtably be the console with the best games. Lets examine each console one by one.

Dreamcast: released Q4 1999:

Webmaster's Ranking: 7.5/10

Overlooked by many, the Dreamcast is actually quite a console. It may not be as powerful as the others, but it's power is comparable to ps2. It makes up for its loss in power with excellent games pumped out by Sega and a few more great 3rd party developers. This is a great deal especially since the price has dropped to $99. Even though Sega will stop producing Dreamcast in the near future, it will continue to support the console in software. It isn't very expensive and has a large selection of games with some of the best graphics. However due to its short life span, I rank this console a 7.5 out of 10. I love Dreamcast and Sega and all, but they just ain't sell'in.

Some of the Best Dreamcast games, from someone who’s played ‘em:

Soul Calibur - Namco
Jet Grind Radio - Smilebit/Sega
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 - Activision
Crazy Taxi - Sega
Phantasy Star Online - Sega

Playstation 2: released Q4 2000:

Webmaster's Ranking: 6/10

I must say I was a little disappointed by Sony’s Playstation 2 console. It is still a very good console, and is just a little lower when compared to Dreamcast as of now, because the games haven’t been too great as of yet. I expected it to be everything new and exciting, but it turned out to be a jacked up Dreamcast. The only problem is, the Dreamcast’s games are better than the ps2’s. The games for the ps2 have been quite disappointing I must say dispite 2 notable exceptions. Hopefully with time, the games will evolve to a higher level. One certain aspect that may boost my faith in ps2 is Squaresoft’s Final Fantasy X. As of now though, I have not seen anything quite innovative or astounding that would push me to side with the ps2. One great plus is that the ps2 can play dvd’s. However, the dvd’s come a quite a price. The console itself costs $300 plus a game and memory card comes to about $370. And for something that isn’t very innovation or ground breaking, I wouldn’t pay more for what I can already get. The ps2 has also earned itself a reputation of being very hard to develop for, turning some developers away.

Some of the Best Playstation 2 games:

SSX - EA sports (great game)
Timesplitters - Eidos/Free Radical Also a great game
Kessen - Koei
Tekken Tag Tournament - Namco
Armored Core 2 - Agetec

Best in the near future: Final Fantasy X or Metal Gear Solid 2.

Gamecube: to be released Q4 2001:

Webmaster's Ranking: 8.5/10

Coming as a Zelda fan, you may have assumed I am a fan of the Gamecube. So far things look solid for Nintendo’s next generation console. The main factor I worry about is the public’s loss of faith in nintendo. However, for those who appreciate the true and utter greatness of nintendo, know that the Gamecube will be one of the best choices out there. When compared in power, the Gamecube is a little more powerful than the ps2. When compared in price, Gamecube is also a good deal. Compare the Gamecube’s $200 price, to ps2’s $300 price, or even to the X-box estimated $300-$400+. This mostly comes due to the fact that Gamecube will be a 100% pure gaming beauty straight from the box. No cheap dvd player included. I’ll put it this way: If I really want to a dvd player, I’ll go out and buy a high quality one, that focuses purely on playing dvd’s. I can’t say too much about the games yet, but Zelda should be great as ever(I’m not bias...). Gamecube has also been quoted as being “easy to develop for”. I’ll be 100% faithful in nintendo if they can release Gamecube on time!

Hopefully some of the best Gamecube games:

Zelda Gamecube - Nintendo (of course)
SSX: Special Edition - EA Sports
Metroid 4 - Retro
Perfect Dark 2 - Rare
Thornado - ???

X-box: released Q2 2002 estimate:

Webmaster's Ranking: 4/10

Don’t get me started in this area. If you think X-box will be great, you have some severe brain damage my friend. Microsoft knows nothing of games, all they know how to do is buy out the companies that make good games. The console itself also costs a ton of money. Even if you wanted to get X-box for the dvd, get Playstation 2 instead. It has better games plus the dvd you seek, probably at a lower price. Also notice that the ps2 is out now. However, not much is known about the X-box, so it could take us by surprise. If so, that’s great, if not, buy any other console.

Some of the best upcoming X-box games:

Metal Gear Solid 2 - Konami
Malice - Microsoft
Halo - Bungie
Crash Bandicoot - ??? (Its no longer Sony)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 - Activision

Well that just about wraps it up. This is just my personal thoughts of the consoles, and you can post yours using the poll below. Right now its still hard to tell which console will be the best next generation console. Though I may favor Gamecube, I am loosing faith in it due to people’s misunderstandings. All four in actuality are fairly good consoles. We’ll have to wait and see what happens on the next edition of: The Cavern’s Console Wars.
