World War I

World War I

World War I was one of the most brutal and horrible wars we, as a nation, have ever been affiliated with. The dead lied on the battlefields with bullets pierced through their bodies. The cities were labeled by air raid attacks and battles. This war pitted Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey against the allies France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States. The results were devestating to us; humanity.

I will not begin to get into the details concerning the causes of the war, and I won't begin to describe in depth the war for it would take too long, and it would be too sad. Instead I have decided to just give an overview and the outcome of the Great War.

WWI started in 1914 and ended in 1918; a total of 4 years at war. That's 4 years lost to hate. Europe had divided into two hostile groups, and the war really started when Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austira was assassinated in Sarajevo, June 28, 1914. France got involved when Germany attacked, which in turn brought Great Brtitain into the war by treaty obligation. Because of machine guns, the war quickly resorted to trench warfare. There were many great battles and invasions. There were many great people, and they did many great things. There was fighting in 3 different continents and it cost over 8 million soldiers' lives. Gas warfare, and constant bomb raids became new tactics that are still used today. World War I ended when an Artmistice was signed between Germany and the Allies at Rethondes, France, November 11, 1918. The other central powers had already bowed out of the war leaving Germany to fend for themselves.

There is much more to be said about World War I, however, it is not the main focal point of my project. It is however the source of the painting and the real issues I've chosen to explore. World War I has influenced our society through tactics and decsions, and it will never be forgotten in the future.

Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)
