Hurricane DOUGLAS

Hurricane Douglas in the Eastern Pacific 07/23/2002 5:15 AM EDT

Hurricane Douglas has strengthened to 105 mph and turned toward the west away from the coast of Mexico. Currently it is about 485 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas. Winds and rain will not affect land areas, but waves and high surf will. Surf of less than 8 feet will break from Cabo Corrientes southward about 200 miles today, dangerous rip currents will gradually subside over the next few days. Highest surf will affect the southern tip of Baja California where breaking waves of 12 to 18 feet and dangerous rip currents are likely the next 12 to 24 hours, until Douglas moves west of the area and weakens. Another low-pressure area 300 miles SSW of the Gulf of Tehuantepec is moving west away from land. Conditions appear favorable for further development over the next several days.
